Ida This looks like the same family too. What do you think? They are listed in the HIES Records as passengers on the New Zealander travelling to Portland Victoria Australia in 1853. There is no mention of Catherine's husband Donald - which suggests that he has died before 1853. Hi List Just joined. I am researching the background of Archibald McINTYRE, his wife Flora, nee McLEAN and their children. Various sources indicate that Archibald and Flora would have married around the mid 1830s but does not tell where. The 1841 census shows: Archibald and Flora, both aged 30 Angus 6 Mary 4 Hector 2 Archibald 1 month Information to date indicates that the children were born in either Kilninian or Tobermory - but that is not entirely clear. The 1851 census shows: Archibald 40 Flora 38 Mary 14 Hector 12 Archibald 10 John 8 Christina 6 Donald 4 William 2 Angus does not appear in 1851. May have left home or has possibly died. Strangely though, he does not appear as a child of this couple on their death certificates. Later information states that all children after Archibald were born in Ardnamurchan but not the precise location. Neither Donald nor William survived childhood nor did a later sibling, George. There was an even later child, a second William, who did. Archibald, a blacksmith, Flora, Mary, Hector, Archibald, John, Christina and the second William migrated to Geelong, Victoria, aboard the "Hornet", arriving in October 1854. I would love to hear from anyone with an interest in, or knowledge of, this family. the older of the tworobbos at Bairnsdale, Victoria, OZ
Good morning Peter > I read your message below in the Mull site and thought that I would > contact you to share my McIntyre relative with you. My great great grandparents - Archibald McMillan and Flora McMillan (nee McIntyre) came to Portland Victoria in 1853 in the New Zealander. They brought with them their children - John, Alexander, Ann and Christy. Their son Angus had come before them. They settled around Branxholme, Vic which is between Portland and Hamilton. When I got a copy of Flora's death certificate (1870), it listed her parents as being Angus McIntyre and Christina McCormack. When I got a copy of Archibald's death certificate (1871), it listed his parents as being McMillan and Christina McCormack. I have some doubt as to whether both of them would have had mothers with the same name - I rather suspect that the informant was not quite clear about the names of these people who had never been in Australia and so were from the far distant past. Their ages were also rather hard to calculate finding them in the census in Mull, and then finding their ages in the HIES records as 60 - noting that the cut off age for HIES was 60. The 1841 Census for Mull has the family in Oskamull ------------------------------------------------------- Flory MacMillan, aged 42, agricultural labourer Cirsty, daughter, aged 11 John, son, aged 8 Alexander, son, aged 4 (note - no Archibald present, and also no Sarah (Marion), Ann, Flory or Mary are mentioned - see below in reference to the grandson Angus McLean who is present in the household in 1851 Census.) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1851 Census, Mull ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The 1851 Census for Mull has the family of Archibald Macmillan and Flora McIntyre living in Oskamull. District - Ulva and Geometra. Page. 76. House number 19. Archibald MacMillan, aged 64, lobsterman, born Kilninian & Kilmore (Interesting given that he cites his age as 60 for the HIES requirements in 1853). So his birth date would be 1887 - if this age in the census is to be believed. On the death certificate in 1871 - his age is cited as being 95 which means that he would have been born in 1776. Flora MacMillan, wife, aged 60, born Kilninian & Kilmore (Lobster fisher’s wife) Born about 1791. Christian MacMillan, aged 20, daughter (Born about 1831 in Ulva Argyllshire) John MacMillan, aged 18, son, lobsterman (Born about 1833 in Ulva Argyllshire) Alexander MacMillan, aged 12, son, lobsterman (Born about 1839 in Ulva Argyllshire) Angus McLean, aged 4, grandson (Born in about 1847 in Kilninian & Kilmore, Argyllshire) (It should be noted that Anne (29) mentioned in the HIES records is not mentioned in either the 1851 or 1841 Census.) My father's name was Neil McIntyre McMillan and it seemed that in his generation of the family there were lots of children given the names of someone from the family eg Neil McInyre McMillan, Hector McDonald McMillan, Colin Campbell McMillan. I have been looking for a Neil McIntyre as a result because I am almost 100% sure that he would be named after his McIntyre relative. Does any of this connect to your research? I am working in Samoa, but I come from Melbourne. Ida Thanks for responding to me. These Mull McDonald names fit with the names that I have obtained from elsewhere for the siblings of Marion who married Hector McDonald from Skye. So it looks like the same family. Also one of the properties in the area where they settled in Victoria was Gometra. I will contact the other two people who your state are connected to this family too. It is through Hector rather than Marion that I am connected - So I will see what their connection is and see if we can share any info. I have had some email exchanges with Michelle before. My new ongoing email is libbymcm@optusnet.com.au Regards Libby

Thanks Ian. I think that family in the census is a different one from the one I'm looking for. Donald MacDonald and Janet Fletcher had the following children (they may have had more, these are who I have so far): Coll b. @1826 Renfrew Janet b. @1828 Renfrew d. 1903 m. Allen McLean Margaret b. @1835 Renfrew d. 1873 m. John MacCormick John b. @1844 d. 1871 Janet is definitely shown as m.s. Fletcher on John's death certificate and on Margaret's death certificate. I recently put in a request to the list for anyone who might have a connection to Catherine Macquarie who married Donald McDonald and had a number of children including Marion who married Hector McDonald from Stenschell Skye. My direct line is to Hector McDonald from Skye and he married Marion in Branxholme in Victoria in 1867. Catherine was the daughter of Sarah McLean and Torquil Macquarie. I had no response - however, is this likely to be the same family Macquarie family that is being discussed in the last few entries? I don't know where in Mull this Catherine Macquarie and husband Donald McDonald come from - although I have found one family in Iona in the 1867 census - does anyone,on reflection, have a connection to this family? Does anyone have info on Catherine McQuarrie b before 1760. She married Alex McDugal (McDougal) 1776 Kilninian. She was a sister of Ann McQuarrie who married Lachlan McQuarrie 16th of Ulva(1715-1818) . Known Children of Alex McDougall and Catherine(Kate) McQuarrie Duncan - 1777 Lauchlane - 1779 Ann - 1781 Janet - 1783 John - 1784 Charles abt 1795 - 1 Feb 1871 Tobermory Charles and his mother Kate are Craignure Inn in 1800s. Ref to Alex Catherine and Charles can be found in Jo Currie's book. Can anyone place any of above family McQuarrie or McDougall. Tricia
Hi Linda I'm presently going through the McDonalds from the IGI etc which is slow going :-) I haven't came across Janet Fletchers death yet. If you care to share the infor great. Donald McDonald ( @1799- 1863) and wife, Janet Fletcher (@1794-1868) had daughter Margaret McDonald (b.1838 Glasgow). The parents' birthdates are approx and calculated from ages at death. Margaret married John MacCormick in 1859 and their marriage record states that they were 2nd cousins. I'm trying to find that relationship. I have John's parents (John MacCormick and Margaret Black) and grandparents (Dugald MacCormick/Ann McLean and John Black/Catherine McMillan) but I'm having trouble finding Margaret's grandparents, Donald McDonald's death certificate doesn't show any parents at all and Janet's only shows her father (Archibald Fletcher). Anyone come across Donald McDonald and Janet Fletcher and have further information on them? Thanks!
Ida - Yes, I'll claim these too. Archibald MacLachlan was born 2 Apr 1868 in Tiree, illegitimate son of Marion MacLachlan and John McArthur(a labourer). Marion is the daughter of Donald and Annabella (McDonald) MacLachlan and was born 1832. I've found that it's not uncommon amongst illegitimate Mull folks to switch between their mum's and dad's surnames so I think that covers the McArthur bit. As for the McDonald - I can only assume that it was an error since the rest of the household is McDonald especially since Marion (his mum) is also shown as McDonald. I'll look into this a bit further. Mary Knox who is shown in 1881/1891 was the illegitimate daughter of Mary MacLachlan and Archibald Knox. She was born 3 Jul 1876 in Greenock. HTH Linda
Hi Ida & Linda, I could ask a similar question about my MCKINNONs (and I have done so a few times) because something funny sure seems to be up there too. MCARTHUR factors in there too. I'm beginning to think that some name changing was going on at that time, in Kilninian, and likely other places too. Why? Not sure, but my guess would be something to do with avoiding the government and other authority figures, perhaps after being dealt a bad hand during clearances previously. My great great grandparents, Archibald MCKINNON & Catherine MCARTHUR disappear from all records after appearing on the 1841 census at Burg, KLN, with 4 year old daughter, Catherine. No birth records of their sons, Donald or Neil (my great grandfather) born in 1840s. In 1851, Donald was still in Burg with MCARTHUR relatives ... where were the rest of them? A subsequent census ( it escapes me which one, right now) has both MCKINNON brothers working together, but lists them as MCARTHURs ... mistake or deliberate name change? Not sure. All 3 (known) MCKINNON offspring turn up on census & in marriage records etc., in the area, in the coming years, so obviously they did not move far away at all (no immigration etc.) That makes me think that their parents weren't too far away either ... so how did they avoid all further census? Stranger still, how did they avoid having their deaths recorded? Sounds to me like they were deliberately 'hiding' rather than being missed all those times. Mary

Hi Julia and Trica, Many thanks for information. Whilst I take your point about John and Colin looking similar in 'old' handwriting, in the 1861 census Colin is as clear a day. Absolutely no chance of any misinterpretation. Can only think that the enumerator must have been on the pop (or something stronger) when he recorded this entry. The handwriting for this part of the census just happens to be one of the clearest pages out of all the many census pages that I have transcribed. Regards, Ian
Hi Ian & Julia Ian As Julia says the 2 John & Colin look similar when handwritten. >From Argyll microfiche IGI John Currie b13 Aug 1847 c24 Sep 1847 to Duncan Currie and Sarah MacDougall. Kinlochspelvie, Argyll, Scotland C115452 1842-1854. 1851 1871 census show this John and as no Colin in either I believe the entry in 1861 to be an error. Julia. Sarah was a McDougall 1813 app to John McDougal and Marrion/Sarah Lamont. Torosay. (there is a Marion b 1813 so imagine this is Sarah). Will check Sarah's death cert later. A sister of Sarah -Mary b 1798 married Duncan Livingstone 1822 Torosay. - I still wonder if we will get our MacDougal families to link - we must be getting closer. I must check back your data wand perhaps do an exchange again soon. Tricia
Hi Tricia, I have just checked the original film for 1861 Kinlochspelvie which clearly shows Colin as aged 13. The strange thing is that Ancestory.co.uk shows Colin as John. I'm real puzzled as 1851 shows a John aged 3 that would fit with John being 13 in 1861. John appears in the 1871 census as 23 so the balance of probability would have it that Colin is John but what an error. Might I ask the source of John's birth. Ian
Entry on MullGenealogy - census 1861 1861 Kinlochspelvie District : 1 Page No : 12 House No : 51 Locality : No 1 Portfield 18614051 Currie Duncan 49 Head Crofter Argyll Kinlochspelvie Currie Sarah 46 Wife Argyll Kinlochspelvie Currie Mary 60 Sister Argyll Kinlochspelvie Currie Colin 13 Son Scholar Argyll Kinlochspelvie Currie Hugh 11 Son Scholar Argyll Kinlochspelvie Currie Duncan 9 Son Scholar Argyll Kinlochspelvie Currie Sarah 5 Dau Scholar Argyll Kinlochspelvie I believe Colin aged 13 should read John aged 13. John was born 24 Sep 1847. Sarah C aged 46 is Sarah McDougall and in 1841 census with her McDougall siblings at 1841 Kinlochspelvie District No : 3 Page No : 6 House No : 26 Locality : Crogan 18414062 1861 above at No3 Portfield were Sarah's siblings and No 2 Portfield had Duncan Currie's brother Hector and fam. Anyone else researching this line. Thanks for the data on the site - it is just so helpful for researching. Tricia
Too bad...thought that might be an easy solution to the problem... This death was in March 1892 and as she was not on the 1901 Census I assume it to be correct. By 1901 her daughter Mary Ann had baptised her own daughter Ann McQ.
