    3. Hi Ida, Yes, I found the 1841 record for Hugh and Ann and eventually found the 1851 census on Scotlands People although not on the Mull site. Just to add to the confusion, I also found Ann's death cert (5th February 1861) which says she is the widow of Hugh Cracken. I'm doing quite well with my research into the families from Kintra. I've found quite a bit of detail on over forty families so far. 3. Hello Would there be any Stewarts on the List with a connection to the following family - they all siblings: Hugh Stewart (died c. 1835) - Major in His Majesty's 75th Regiment of Foot Margaret Stewart married John Stewart (both deceased by 1835) Mary Stewart Ann Stewart married Duncan Carmichael ? Stewart married a McColl Janet Stewart married ? can't make out the name Time frame approx 1770s,1780s for their births. Anne Stewart/Duncan Carmichael are my g-g-g-grandparents. I found a testament on Scotlands People for Hugh Stewart (which is very very hard to read and is 11 pages) and I've only got as far as him naming his sisters (pg 4). Prior to this I had no knowledge of Anne Stewart's family. Do any of these names ring a bell with anyone? Thanks. Best wishes Moira

    3. Hi Michelle, Ida & List As a matter of confirmation the above errant Hector is on the 1841 England Census at Northumberland Court Lodging House, St. martin-in-the-Fields Parish, Westminster as HECTOR MACQUARIE, 40, ARMY, S(b. Scotland) in what appear to be largely military lodgings. Indexed on Ancestry as MacGuaire which I naively thought was Gaelic till I read the actual entry. 3. Hello Jill, Thank you for helping me. On Thursday 17 January, the following message was sent to Russell: Re Margaret McLean/Morrison Family- "I'm wondering if this isn't the same family Jo Currie has in her McLean Book pg 57 although she reports Margaret with parents Lachlan McLean & Ann McLeod" Have I quoted the wrong McLean book? My ancestors, Lachlan and Ann were in Sorne in 1767, and Mingary 1769-1772. I have no idea if they are connected to the Mcleans that you have mentioned in your message, as I have very little information on them. 3. Hi Ida & List Yes, Hector 'The Hero' (quite ironic really) MACQUARIE was Charles's illegitimate son. My original info from John Ritchie's biog of Lachlan Macquarie said Hector: Quit the army to live with him (Charles) on Ulva. Shortly before Charles's death, Hector had fled his creditors, enlisted in the 55th and sailed with his wife, Margaret, for India where he died in 1836. (p220) Robin Walsh of the Macquarie Room at Macquarie University has obtained new information which reveals that Hector's wife Margaret Simpson died in childbirth in India in 1836, but that Hector actually died in Coventry 9th Jan 1845. You can find this info here: http://www.lib.mq.edu.au/all/journeys/people/profiles/hector.html Robin also says that Hector was living with his father Charles in Ulva 1829-1930, so he would almost certainly have been the father of Hugh Maclaine MACQUARIE bapt 26 Jan 1829. Hector seems to have been quite the tomcat, as evidenced by his behaviour while in his uncle Lachlan's service in Australia, so I am sure this Hugh would have been illegitimate, as there is no mention of a marriage to Cursty McLucaish. Furthermore, Hugh Maclaine MACQUARIE may possibly have been named after his cousin Hugh MACLAINE (b 1781, the 2nd son of Farquhar MACLAINE & Betty MACQUARIE), as Hugh had recently died in Jamaica 13th Oct 1828. So those are my thoughts. I wonder if Hugh appears in the Mull 1841 census? I know I have been quiet on this list, but I am still lurking around, and will certainly pipe up if I have something to contribute :-) I am tracing the descendants of Lt Col Lachlan MACQUARIE's siblings Betty MACQUARIE & Farquhar MACLAINE and Charles MACQUARIE & Marianne WILLISON. Nothing is known of the parentage of the MACQUARIE sibling's father, also named Lachlan. However, their mother Margaret (Peggy) MACLAINE, had MACQUARRIE ancestry, her grandfather being Lachlan MACQUARRIE 14th of Ulva, but I have not delved into his other descendants at this stage. Happy Australia Day for yesterday, to all my fellow Aussies in this list. It was a beautiful day on Sydney harbour, and the sight of the tall ships racing certainly conjured up images of how my Mull ancestors may have arrived in Australia (actually at Portland in Victoria, on the same boat, the 'New Zealander', as Libby's MCMILLAN ancestors). 3. Hi Barbara, Regret to say that there does not appear to be an entry in the book for Lachlan and Ann. 3. Hi Libby Thanks for making contact. I have read through the material you have sent but at this stage I can't make a connection. This is not to say there isn't one - just that I can't make it at this stage of my own research. There are some interesting parallels in names though and if I can get further back it may well be that a connection does exist. More work to be done! An interesting aspect is that both families came to the Port Campbell district but, again, may not necessarily be significant. Cheers the older of the tworobbos

    3. Hi Libby I'd say it looks like the same family. Which brings up another interesting ? I know we've chatted about this previously but. Donald McDonald & Catherine McQuarrie have the following children Neil Aug 7 1827 Oskamull KLN/Ulva Ann Aug 30 1830 Oskamull KLN/Ulva Malcolm Aug 13 1832 Balichloich Gometra Margaret Jun 22 1834 Balichloich Gometra Flora Mar 17 1836 Balichloich Gometra Mary from the census abt 1839 Male Apr 11 1839 Gometra ?? could this be Mary although it states lawful son Marion/Sarah/Sally Oct 8 1840 Balichloich Gometra Catherine Jul 26 1842 Balichloich Gometra Christina from the census or passenger list There is however another couple of children I've found with the same parents listed There's probably other that I haven't came across yet Flora McDonald May 8 1842 Ormaig Ulva Hugh McDonald Apr 18 1844 Ormaig Ulva I'm sure we'll all end up related to each other eventually. It just takes time to sort out who's who :-[ later Ida Elizabeth McMillan wrote: >Ida > >This looks like the same family too. What do you think? 3. Hi Michelle Sorry about that :-) Maybe it's one of those happy coincidences :-[ Just so I can check my facts this Charles McQuarrie that marries Marianne Willison. He is also the father of the illegitimate son with Janet McLean. Hector "Hero" McQuarrie bapt Jul 3 1794 in Moy TRS 7020101, 10. In Jo's MIP pg 432 the McQuarrie it states that Charles and Janet's son Hector "the Hero" m's Margaret Simpson both appear to die 1836 So I wonder who this is then? Lieut. Hector MacQuarie and Cursty McLucaish, Ulva, a son Hugh McLaine (as MacQuarie in IGI C115444, 1005) bapt. 26 Jan. 1829 Any thoughts Ida Michelle Giza-Vink wrote: >Hi Libby, Ida & list > >I thought I would state for the record that I have no knowledge of this >Catherine (& her father Torquil) MACQUARRIE & Donald MCDONALD, hence my >silence on the matter.
