    1. [SCT-ISLEOFMULL] Allan McDonald & Mary McKinnon
    2. Merle & Ida King
    3. Hi Doreen As Doreen Hornsby is listed on the web site as a contact for this line. I'm hoping she's still here. Going through the IGI's I noticed 2 additional children not listed there. I wonder Doreen if these are yours as well as they are registered with parents Allan McDonald & Mary McKinnon. James McDonald Oct 1 1871 Tobermory C115491, 0722 and Flora May 20 1873 Tobermory C115491, 0771 neither of these children seem to be in either the 1871 Breadalbane St. TBR residence or the 1881 High St. TBR residence. Your Mary 1820 seems a tad old to have these children but if they had Lachlan May 2 1860 the possiblilty is there :-[ There could be other's that pop up but that's all for now. Ida

    1. [SCT-ISLEOFMULL] McCormick (McMillan-McIntyre connection)
    2. Elizabeth McMillan
    3. Hi June Re: 'Strange Name' & McCormick connection: I have read your emails on the Mull list in relation to the given name of your relative. There is no doubt that the transcribing of names is often inaccurate and also the scribe who wrote it down originally, may have misheard or not understood. Someone once told me that the census takers did not always visit the village and relied on second hand information to fill in their forms - which is a further complication. I have often sent messages to the list and so you may recall my name from time to time. I keep trying to make connections with others, but no luck so far ... On this occasion, I noted your McCormick connection and the name - John Angus. My grandfather was John Angus McMillan and my father had a brother named John Angus McMillan. His father (ie my gg grandfather) was John Angus McMillan - born in Mull (Ulva Parish). This John Angus McMillan's parents were Archibald McMillan and Flora McIntyre - who were both born in Mull, but died in Victoria Australia. Archibald and Flora McMillan came to Victoria in 1853 on the New Zealander. Both have Christina McCormick listed on their death certificates as their mother. Their children were: Marrion 'Sarah', Mary, Angus, John, Alexander, Ann, Christy. Regards Libby McMillan

    3. Libby, Thank you for your kind words about the website. I like to think that Mull, Iona and close by islands have the most comprehensive set of online records available for an area on the web but as I have said many times before it would not have been possible without the help of so many individuals throughout the world. I can place the information on the web but I cannot do this without being supplied with the data. So in short, keep the information coming. What might seem an insignificant tidbit to you might be just the piece of information that someone else is desperately seeking. All the best, Ian

    3. Ian Thanks for the advice on how to check the different names, using the info on the site. I will do this. 8 years of your work is a major contribution - and as I look for family history resources in other places in Scotland, it is clear that your work has been a major contributor to all of us who search on Mull. Other places do not have such wonderful resources. Regards Libby

    3. Hi Libby, >>Also - you make mention of the interchangeable names. I realise that such a list would be long, but can anyone who knows these please direct me to such a list. I am aware of variations, but it is more the totally different names that are interchangeable that you wouldnever guess that interest me. It might help break through some of the brick walls. May be a start. If you go to the Surname Index page of the web site enter a surname and add a question mark you will get a list of the alternative surnames that I use. I realise that the list is not totally comprehensive but is the result of eight years accumulated knowledge. As ever I would welcome corrections and / or corrections to this list. All the best, Ian

    2. Elizabeth McMillan
    3. In the message from Ida (see below) there is a mention of Ann McMillan in the 1851 Census. We have an Ann McMillan that went with her parents (& siblings), Archibald and Flora McMillan (nee McIntyre) from Oskamull - to Portalnd Victoria Australia on the New Zealander in 1853. I have not found her in the McMillan household in Oskamull in either the 1841 or 1851 census - and wonder if perhaps this could be her. What do you think? Also - you make mention of the interchangeable names. I realise that such a list would be long, but can anyone who knows these please direct me to such a list. I am aware of variations, but it is more the totally different names that are interchangeable that you would never guess that interest me. 2. Merle & Ida King
    3. I'm wondering about this Marion Black Marion Black May 13 1813 d/o Lachlan Black and Elizabeth Stewart m's Duncan McKinnon bef 1841 has Margaret McKinnon abt 1842 and 1844 he dies bef 1851 as she and her children are in Bremen Oir KLF She m's Donald Boyd a tailor before 1861 as they appear in 1861 Ardtun KLF (I haven't found a marriage for them) There is a Marion Black of Ardtun KLF who m's Donald McDonald a tailor from Kenloch KLF Mar 3 1849. The only child I've found to date for this couple is Robert Stewart McDonald Aug 3 1856-Apr 12 1857 Ardtun KLF the informant on his death was Uncle Lachlan Black. (I believe he m's Ann Rose) Having a son with Stewart as a middle name would lead me to think that she might be the daughter of Lachlan Black & Elizabeth Stewart. I wonder if McDonald & Boyd is another of those interchangeble names such as McAlister/McDonald, Darroch/McDonald were??? As I find no reference in the 1851 census for Donald & Marion McDonald . However there is a Donald McDonald aged 33 a Uv in the h/h of Donald McAllister/McDonald & Ann McMillan. I think this one m's Mary Black Mar 6 1852 he's from Bunessan she's from Ardtun KLF Ida

    3. Hi Mary Thank you for this. Both Ian (the techno guy) and I (the snoop) find great pleasure in helping others locate family members. We're always interested in family trees no matter how large or small they are. One never knows who has that missing little tidbit someone else has been desperately seeking. Even though your not actively researching your ancestors we'd love to see who your interested in.
