    3. I shall try to present this logically. In the 1841 census of the quoad sacra of Iona, in the Creich area, we see in Gorstenarm.? the following household; Finlay Macmillan 20 Crofter Bell do. 50 Mary do 20 Catherine do 15 Jess do 13 James do 20 Ag. Lab. John do 20 Mary was Finlay's wife, a McInnes. They, James and Mary's parents (Dugald and Janet) and siblings emigrated to Lochaber, Quebec, Canada where several Ross of Mull families had already settled. A local history says they arrived in 1842 but they were not early enough for the 1842 Canadian census. The 1851 census for Lochaber is missing. The 1861 census lists Finlay 40 Farmer Mary 40 Isabella 14 Arch. 12 Marian 10 Christina 8 Donald 6 house built in 1844 James 38 Farmer Flora 32 Isabella 8 Sally 6 Rebecca 2 Marian 14 house built in 1848 All the children and James' wife were born in Canada East, now Quebec province. Finlay died in 1868. In the 1881 census Archie, Donald and Bell were still at home and single. James and Flora had Catherine (19) and Flora (17) in their household. Most of them were now Baptist rather than Church of Scotland. There are 5 MacMillans in the cemetery in marked graves including Isabella McDonald, wife of Archibald McMillan, died in 1868, aged 87, who might be the Bell of the Creich census who arrived at a later date. As a child my mother was very close to Finlay's daughter Christina then an old lady married to Hugh McNeil (an Irish McNeil). Christina's brothers had gone west and established a prosperous bakery in Victoria, British Columbia. Christina and her husband had tried that too but had preferred to return and take over the family farm. They died in 1928.

    3. Hi JeanetJean and Libby JeanetJean could you expand a bit more on this statement about the parents JeanetJean wrote: >Mary was Finlay's wife, a McInnes. 3. Morning All I have been following this thread with interest. My paternal great grandmother was called Catherine Maclean, and her brother Hector was a Baptist, and might even have been a lay preacher, but I may be mistaken in that. The source for this is family oral history. Donald Meek is definitely the authority on this aspect of Mull and Tiree, and indeed his father was the Baptist minister on Tiree. I am not sure if the reason people turned to the Baptist church was similar to the reasons behind the 1843 Church of Scotland disruption, in that they were not in approval of the system of patronage practised by the established church. I also seem to remember reading that there were huge evangelical rallies in Scotland in the Victorian period and that conversion might have been as a result of these. It's a project for another day! 1. Re: [SCT-ISLEOFMULL] Mull clearances
    2. Jill Dakin
    3. I always understood that Prebble's history was very black and white and that Eric Richards takes a much more balanced view. With noteable exceptions, such as Ulva, many of the people who left Mull chose to do so in the hope of a better life "far off in sunlit places". That is not to say that they weren't miserably homesick, but economic necessity drove many of them to join schemes like the HIES and as such they weren't necessarily cleared in the dramatic framework of forced evictions suffered in other parts of the Highlands. The first to leave were the tacksmen who had the means to relocate got out early; I think Jo Currie makes this point in "Mull, the Island and its People". If you are looking for stories of brutal landowners who callously destroyed homes and left aged grandmothers lying in the heather then you'll find Prebble has plenty of these, but by and large many of the lairds of Mull were so poor themselves that they reached a point where they could no longer help their people. Prebble and Richards don't dwell on Mull simply because the clearances mostly took part in other parts of the highlands. Jill

    3. Hi Barbara and Jim, Many thanks for your message. I'm just about to go to Bristol to see Clara so I will pass on your congratulations to Jon and Hazel. I'm sure Jenny would be pleased to know that her name has been included. Hazel and Clara are still in hospital as Hazel had a section. They are excepted home on Wednesday. Everything ok otherwise. Not a great deal otherwise to report from Ricky. Mull is still keeping me busy. Also out quite a bit with the U3A fixing problems in members homes. No plans for Mull this year except for usual September fortnight. Thought I might go up for opening of new Ross Centre but all I can get is 'sometime after Easter'. Not much use in making bookings. 'Uncle' Neil is still in Sydney with Bridget. Both are coming over in June to attend a friend of Neil's wedding in Sweden. Jenny's parents have moved to near Jane (Jenny's sister). Makes a great deal of sense and they are requiring more and more help. Trust all is well with you both and your extended family. All the best, Ian

A key text on the clearances : Richards,Eric: "The Highland Clearances" Printed 2000 reprinted 2002 published by Birlinn (www.birlinn.co.uk) (UK 9.99 or USA $17.95) He happens to be a Professor here in S.Australia so there is much detail on lots places where there were significant clearances. It is much more detailed and exact than Prebble. However Mull does not rate a detailed mention. 3. Just a short note to add that Sarah (or Morag, really with her name often translated as Marion as well as Sarah)Buchanan (1783-1877) of Oban and Achnacroish after her marriage to Peter MacFarlane lived on Mull in Achnacroish, Torosay. She came to be a Baptist prior to emigration to Cape Breton in 1820, perhaps about 1810. She and Buchanan and perhaps MaColl relatives established a small Baptist Church in West Bay, Inverness Co. Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. The congregation did not survive but the descendants continued to have a close affection for the Baptist Church in Nova Scotia even though they attended the Presbyterian Church - one of Sarah Buchanan and Peter MacFarlane's daughter's daughter married a Baptist minister Rev. Wallace MacWalker.

    3. Hi Ida, Yes I'm still here! I checked out James but he is from a different Allan McDonald and Mary McKinnon who married in Glasgow 1870, I presume the same applies to Flora. I have the first at home, but not the second. It is a a pity that there is not more detailed info on in the Clearances as they affected Mull. It also seems like there is very little on the Free Church too. However, I will keep looking and will certainly follow up on these suggestions. Regards Libby McMillan

    2. William Campbell
    3. My mother, Euphemia MacGilivray, was born in Mull and many years later when visited by a friend who knew her in her childhood she was called "Eric" (phonetic spelling) which I am now told is the gaelic for Euphemia. Could this be a possible answer to the mystery name Eary? Bill (Willie) ---- Please note that I am no longer using my camb1@tinyworld.co.uk email address. Please instead add this one to your address books as my other has will ceased to be active.

    3. Hi Elizabeth Do you perchance have any parentage information on Flora McIntyre? I'm currently researching my brother-in-law's McIntyre family. His great grandfather, Archibald McIntyre, wife Flora, nee McLean, and six children arrived in Vic aboard the "Hornet" in October 1854. Archibald, we think, was baptised at Ruaig, Mull, in August 1801, son of John McIntyre and Mary McLean. Archibald, as above, also married a McLean in March 1835 at Kilninian.
