    3. Hi Ida, Thank you for trying to help me, have felt a bit at sea recently with paying for credits and not finding anything. Janet married a Mr Campbell, but I have no idea of his first name. I had some paid research done for me over the past 2 years, and as I was looking for information about my grandparents, the link to Mary McCallum was brought up with only minimal research done. I have been fascinated and intrigued that I had a link to Mull, as all my single life here in New Zealand I was teased about being a Smith, and wished my parents had another surname. I successfully managed this when I married a Manson one of the first families to settle in New Zealand from Scotland. But that is a whole different story to research in the future. I don't even know when Mary's father Hugh died, as I can't find any information on him. As you say, I might find something on Mull genealogy. I will try to find time tomorrow to do this. Thank you for your suggestions. 1. [SCT-ISLEOFMULL] Two Dugald McArthur/Mary McArthur families
    2. Linda M. Towne
    3. Hello all. There appear to be two families with parents Dugald McArthur and Mary McArthur - one in Ardchiavaig and one in Uisken at roughly the same time. I'm hoping someone on the list can help me sort them out. Familysearch.org has two marriages in 1807 in Kilfinichen & Kilvickeon for Dugald McArthur and Mary McArthur: 29 Jan 1807 and 26 Mar 1807 - I haven't yet looked at the OPR to see if there are clues as to which is which (and of course, the OPR doesn't always show an occupation or residence). Does anyone know which family Hugh baptised 1813 belongs to? How about which Mary married Murdoch Campbell? Did the Uisken family have two sons both named John? 1841 census suggests that but ? ______________________________________________________________________ 1841 Kilfinichen Ardchiavaig McArthur Dugald 55 Agric Labourer Y in Parish McArthur Mary 55 Y in Parish McArthur Anne 28 Y in Parish McArthur Euphemia 26 Y in Parish McArthur Charles 17 Y in Parish McArthur Mary 15 Y in Parish 1851 Kilfinichen Ardchiavaig McArthur Dugald 69 Weaver Kilfinichen McArthur Mary 69 w Kilfinichen McArthur Ann 42 Ud servant Kilfinichen McArthur Donald 38 Us weaver Kilfinichen ____________________________________________________________ 1841 Kilfinichen Uisken McArthur Dugald 55 Agric Labourer Y in Parish McArthur Mary 50 Y in Parish McArthur John 32 Carpenter Y in Parish McArthur John 20 Apprentice Y in Parish McArthur Catherine 16 Y in Parish McArthur Donald 4 gs Y in Parish 1851 Kilfinichen Uisken McArthur Dugald 68 crofter 4½ ac Kilfinichen McArthur Mary 65 w Kilfinichen McArthur Mary 32 Ud Kilfinichen McArthur Donald 14 gs Kilfinichen Thanks for any and all help unravelling these two families. What I wrote were facts. Its up to the list owner how they run and use the controls they have as they occur. I honestly feel that squabbles should not happen in a mailing list. I am sure there are people here who follow what I said about owning or hosting a group. Ultimately, a listowner has the power to moderate any subscriber's posts. I don't agree that squabbles should take place in public, it should all be off list. Ida is in control of the situation. This issue has become an "old cherry", its not the first time. Every now and then it bursts forth into mailings. I understand if Ida may feel that she has a first loyalty to Ian's website and doesn't want to see access to it by subscribers of her list being withdrawn after a squabble that cannot be resolved. Ida has the call about what is or is not discussed in list posts and I think it is courteous not to criticise in public. I offered a solution in what I wrote before that access/admin questions about both websites should be off list; I think it would be more courteous. 1. [SCT-ISLEOFMULL] HISTORY OF THE,BAPTISTS IN SCOTLAND EDITOR — REV. GEO. YUILLE
    2. Darryl
    3. Just noticed the Baptist discussion. Has this book been mentioned yet. [1]http://www.landmarkbaptist.org/documents/History_of_the_Baptists_in_Scott land_Geor ge_Yuille.pdf "BUNESSAN. The village of Bunessan is situated in the Ross of Mull, the south western district of that island verging towards Iona, and the Church there was known in former days as “the Church in the Ross. A few miles distant lies the district of Brolass, whence came the family of Archibald M’Lean, the founder of the denomination in Scotland. The beginnings of the Church date from the labours of the early Baptist Missionaries Sinclair, Tulloch, Fisher, and Mackintosh. Baptisms took place as early as 1818, and Duncan Ferguson is said to have been the first convert. Alexander Grant of Tobermory, who evangelised the island for many years, reported in 1829 that there were 10 Baptists and 8 Independents in the district who met together on the Lord’s Day and once in the week. After the baptism of six persons at Ardalanish in June, 1832, thirty Baptists met for communion, “all in the Ross and a few from Tiree. The Ross brethren were at the time members of the Church centring in Tobermory. About the same time a house which they had built and occupied for nine years was taken from them, and they were driven to worship on the sea-shore, with no shelter save a rock or a hillock. The distance to Tobermory being great-over forty miles-it was agreed that the friends in the Ross should themselves become a Church, and on 31st May, 1835, this was done, Duncan M’Intyre and Duncan Ferguson being chosen as Pastors. Within a year thereafter the membership was 32, and in 1838 the first baptism in Iona took place. From 1834 Duncan Ferguson had been aided by the Home Mission to enable him to carry on Gospel work widely, and he continued its agent until his death in 1882. In 1842 Charles M’Quarie, an earnest Christian merchant, was added to the pastorate, and in 1844 a revival took place and spread to Torosay, the south-east of the island. The Chapel at Ardalanish, a mile from Bunessan, was built about 1845, and held 300, and the brethren in Torosay met at Crogan. Forced emigration of the crofters from 1847 to 1850 thinned the Church, which had numbered 73 in 1844, and the unfortunate emigrants suffered greatly from cholera on their arrival in Canada. An awakening took place in 1875-76, when fifty were added as the fruits of an evangelistic visit of Rev. William Tulloch, Superintendent of the Home Mission, and Mr. Allan Macdougall, and three years later Mr. Maedougall was appointed to the station. In August, 1891, the handsome new Chapel in the village was built and occupied. The succession in the pastorate was as follows: — Duncan M’Intyre (1835-63); Duncan Ferguson (1835-82); Charles M’Quarie (1842-61); Allan Macdougall (1878-86); Alexander Brown (1892-1902); Archibald M’Donald (1906-13); F.W. Taylor (1913-20); Alexander Macarthur (1920-23). Except Messrs. M’Intyre and M’Quarie, all have been Home Mission Agents. Charles M’Quarie, Senr., died in 1861, and his son, the late Charles M’Quarie, and Mrs M’Quarie were devoted promoters of the cause. They died within a few days of each other in 1916." 3. Alex - If I offended you by posting over something you wrote, I apologise. SORRY, but that does not happen and if that is the way this group : is going to be run then I will withdraw immediately and I will encourage anyone : else to do the same. Over to you now Ida as you started this discussion.

    1. [SCT-ISLEOFMULL] Difficulties in reading emails
    2. SuzieQ
    3. The combination of the "bickering" and the ignorance of the request "PLEASE don't reply with the whole digest attached" has made reading of the emails very difficult. I am sorry that there is a problem as I enjoy reading about the research but it hasn't been much of a pleasure of late. I did say I was confused and did I have to know. There are probably more like me saying the same thing. My solution will be to unsubscribe and search the archives for key terms but I will give it a little while longer. Hopefully you guys can settle down

    3. Hi everyone, I am still researching my Donald McDonald family, son of Archibald McDonald and Margaret Curry. He came to NZ about 1864 and all the males iof the family left Mull as well. However, Marion (Sarah), a daughter of Archibald and Margaret married another Archibald McDonald (same name as her father) and they had sons who may have descendents still living in Tobermory. The sons of Sarah and Archibald were Niel, who drowned at age six opposite Browns Shop, Portmore; Archibald, born 1870, Donald born 1873, Mary, born 1875. There were also two girls, Flora and Margaret born in 1863 and 1864 who did not survive. The latest on Sarah was from the 1891 census and she was a laundry maid (59) living on Camerons Land with Donald, groom and Mary dressmakers apprentice. Sarah died in 1909 in Tobermory. They must all be buried at the Tobermory graveyard. I would love to know whether any of the McDonalds still living in Tobermory are desscended from this Archibald and Sarah McDonald. PS Please stop the petty bickering. It's spoiling the website and I'm another one who appreciates the hard work done by Ida and Ian but has also had pleasant experiences in dealing with Michael. Regards, Helen Reardon, Waiuku, NZ

    3. 100% agree! I am sick and tired of reading all the bickering,we are all adults I presume and are free to choose the websites we visit? Then let us make those choices and as Les and many others say -get back to family history research. ======================================== Message Received: Jul 31 2011, 10:59 PM From: "Les Horn" To: "sct-isleofmull [sct-isleofmull]" Cc: Subject: Re: [SCT-ISLEOFMULL] Mull Genealogy web-site & Mull List I am most disapointed that I have to post to the List yet again on this subject.
