To quote SP "Exisiting users/account holders of www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk cannot claim and misuse will result in them being penalised." That certainly brought out the "knowledge" of Listers.  However, I'm sure there are still Listers who don't use SP.  I've certainly come accross a few who obviously don't when answering queries and, as do SP., encourage them to do so. 3. Totally agree with Les. I've spent a fortune there. Can't take it with me. Mind you, I firmly believe it should not cost at all. When you think about it, 'they' (the authorities) insist we register everything, and then sell the info back to us !!. 3. Hi again, My Fletchers (Mull and Glen Orchy) are all pretty big men. My father is 6 ft. 2. in., so is my only brother, and now my 17 year old son has just hit that height as well. Funny thing genes are. I'm thinking nutrition is part of it, but a lot of it is predetermined before birth. I say that because we have 4 sons and their heights vary quite a bit and I think the nutrition would be pretty much equal. They are 5' 11", 5' 10", 6' 2" and the 14 year old is only 5' 4" but growing. I would add that my husband is 5' 6" tall and I'm a bit shorter. The tallest Fletcher I have known was my grandfather's cousin, Alisdair Fletcher, who was born on Mull and farmed mid 20th century with his brother, Colin Fletcher, at Antium. He was at least 6' 4" tall. He was also long lived. He died in his early 90s. What will interest the previous message posters about this ... his mother was a Cameron! Mary Fletcher Harris Canada

    3. James, I dont want to spoil your fun, purpose and effect of your research, but I suspect you would find that high arches in podiatry are more widespread across Britain, Canada and the whole world. If your paternal and maternal ancestry both lie in Argyllshire, Mull I think there may be a fair chance of finding the same characteristics. I have high arches or a high instep as it may also be known with the result that I cant wear cheap shoes, mass produced. I was born in England, first generation paternally and second generation maternally from respectively Argyllshire, Mull & Stirlingshire, and Forfarshire, Montrose and Inverness-shire, the latter maternal ancestry traceable by paper record to 1700. Of my maternal ancestors who emigrated further afield than England, there are only 3, all of them male died unmarried and from my second great grandfather and grandmother from Forfarshire & Kincardineshire they stayed in England and produced more female children than male; 50% of the male first generation children fell in the first world war. The war records I have confirm that the height in a male was quite a bit shorter than the average male might reach today. I think there are many interesting traits to be found in tracing our ancestry that are unique to each family, nevertheless, knowing about the characteristics of our immediate ancestry suggests you did talk with them. ;-) Janet ----- Original Message ----- From: "James St.Clair" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, August 05, 2011 11:46 PM Subject: [SCT-ISLEOFMULL] re; medical condition > thank you to all who shared the accounts of their high arches(and other medical > conditions) which seem to have had their origin on the Isle of Mull. > Very curiously, out of the blue(almost) this very day a sixth generation descendant > from the Isle of Mull who lives in Ontario and whose name is Hugh MacFarlane walked in > through my back door here in Mull River Nova Scotia - - he too has high arches and > problems with calluses and with getting shoes to fit. 1. [SCT-ISLEOFMULL] Roll call - McMillan, Mcintyre, McDonald and McCormick
    2. Libby McMillan
    3. Roll call - McMillan, McIntyre, McDonald and McCormick - confused dates, ages and parents and brick-walls! Archibald and Flora McMillan (nee McIntyre) came to Portland Victoria Australia on the 'New Zealander' in 1853. They came with their adult children - Ann, Christy, John and Alexander. Their son Angus had emigrated to Australia before them. On the death certificates of both parents - two additional children are listed - Marion (Sarah) and Mary. Marion married Neil McLean and lived in Ballygowan. I have no more evidence of Mary. I also have no more information relating to Alexander after he came to Australia. Some people have suggested that they also had a daughter named Flory, but there is no record of her on Archibald's death certificate On Archibald's death certificate (died on 29 Dec 1871) it states that his parents were Archibald McMillan and Christina McCormack. The informant was the father of his son John's wife, Margaret. Margaret and her family came from Skye. It looks as if his parents are more likely to have been John McMillan and Christian McDonald. Christened 9 April 1786, Eddey, Kilninian and Kilmore, Argyll, Scotland (Mull). (Source: IGI records Batch number 7413013, Source call number 0935415, Sheet 91) On Flora's death certificate (died 27 September 1870) it states that her parents were Angus McIntyre and Christina McCormack. The informant was her son Angus. I have no evidence of her birth date or place or birth. The dates of Archibald and Flora's birth are also not clear to me, with them being cited as being 60 on the HIES records in 1853 and Archibald being cited as 95 years on his death certificate and Flora being cited as being 85. Alexander was born in 1835 and so I have considered that when considering when Flora might have been born. When Ann died in 1890, it is cited that she was 56 which suggests that she was born in 1834 not 1824 which is what I have found in Mull (1824). I would be very pleased to hear of any connections or ideas. Libby ------------------------------------- Elizabeth K McMillan (in Solomon Islands until June 2013) - [email protected]

However, what I inherited from my father is not high arches, but nearly flat feet! The other conditions that prevail in his maternal side (McKinnon, McArthur, McLean) are migraines and cancer (mostly breast and ovarian ... suspected BRCA gene involvement) with plenty modern day sufferers of both in my family. I would love to hear from anyone with connections or if someone has come across my Catherine McKenzie (or Lauder) between 1841 - 1895. I've enjoyed the roll call postings recently, so thanks to Linda MacCormick Towne for starting the ball rolling. I don't remember seeing one in a long time though so .... here goes. If everyone who reads the list could post who they are, what their interest in Mull is and what surnames they are researching - that would be super. I'll start :) I'm Linda, born in England but living in the States. I've been researching genealogy/family history for a bit over 25 years - I started with my family (USA, Scotland, England, Ireland) and later added my husband's family (USA, Canada, Denmark, France and more to be determined). My father's line is from Isle of Mull and I've been on this list for more than a decade. My direct line Isle of Mull surnames are MacCormick, MacDonald, Black, MacLachlan, Stewart, Fletcher, MacArthur, McKechnie, McMillan, McLean but I also research collaterally.
