    3. Greetings to all, As there seems to be a bit of a lull on the list at the moment I might take the opportunity to ask a silly question. My ancestor, ggg/grandfather David Borrie was head gardener at Torloisk on the Isle of Mull from the early 1820's till his death in 1876. He had two children by his first marriage, (wife Isobel McLeod). I am descended from the second of these children. David married again (wife Catherine McDonald or McLean). By this second marriage he had a further 4 children, all girls, and these remained at Torloisk all their lives working in the laundry and dairy and also as maidservants in the main house on the estate. My question is, what relationship are these later children and their descendants to me? Half something or other I would imagine. Thankyou, Barry Howard Victoria, Australia.

    3. Linda I like your site. re Effy McPhail was born in 1768, daughter of Donald McPhail and Katherine Campbell. Effy McPhail was baptized on 17 July 1768. Have you anymore info on this branch of McPhail. This is about the date of my Effie McPhail who married Neil McDougall(Mclullich) in Torosay.  They were in GARMONY in 1841.  I visited there when I was over in July. 3. Hello Barry, Yes, you are correct--they would be "half"--same father, different mother. I have many half cousins from my grandfather's first marriage. You say you are descended from the 2nd child by his first marriage. Whatever relationship you have determined for the sibling of your ancestor, then the children by the 2nd marriage would be the same--only just add "half" to the relationship, i.e. half third cousin, etc. Clear as mud?? 2. Mull Listeners: Just a note about the Wick Cemetery also called the McNeil Cemetery. Most of the old Scottish section of the cemetery has no plot plan of where people are buried other than looking at the stones that are still there. My gr. grandafather's brother Neil McNeil left the land for the cemetery as it was part of the old farm and I was very upset when there for a celebration, that they didn't even know where he was buried or any of my other relatives without looking for stones. I did find it though and many other Scots that came to Brock Townhip. When I complaiined about it, they said " Oh, its just the old part of the cemetery" which was quite disturbing to me. There are several “Open Door” sites hosted in or near Manilla on Sunday September 11, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Unfortunately, the Wick cemetery in Brock, which has many Mull burials, is not part of this event. Though of course you can still visit it without a Host being on site. Nearby, the Scotch Cemetery in Brock Township is part of the event under the auspices of the local Brock Township Municipal Council in cooperation with Open Doors Ontario. The Scotch Cemetery has the second largest concentration of Tiree burials in Canada, (Tiverton being the first). Interestingly, the Manilla Library will be open -- it has been closed to the public for 10 years awaiting restoration of the interior. Who knows what it may hold? A man from Scotland has been in touch and his people were McNeills from Caliach but I can't seem to make a connection although I don't know who they married as yet. 3. Further my previous posting, I should also add that none of Malcolm and Ann's descendents have ever managed to trace Ann's origins. The only information we have is on her death certificate as it seems as though she and Malcolm never married. She came from Colonsay. I'd be delighted if anyone can fill in the gaps. 3. Hello Jillian Archibald was my great grandfather. He married Isabella McCormick as his second wife and she died in childbirth in 1885, giving birth to her only child, my grandmother, Catherine Isabella McKechnie. Catherine was brought up by her maternal grandparents, Cormick and Catherine McCormick who also came from Mull and who also lived in Water Street. I think James was Malcolm and Ann's grandson. In fact I think their daughter Catherine gave birth to him long before she married Mr Simpson. I think Ann was probably Archibald's daughter from his first marriage because the age fits. I have a feeling Catherine outlived Mr Simpson and married again. Yes, Archibald married three times. His first wife died and they had two daughters, Marion and Ann. I keep in contact with Ann's granddaughter, another Ann, and she thinks the two sisters were probably farmed out among relatives after their mother, Marion's death. Catherine McInnes, Archibald's third wife was a widow when he married her. Ann thinks they probably separated as they never appear together on a census and she died several years after him. Hope this helps.
