It is looking like my gggrandfather - Archibald McMIllan - may have been the son of John McMillan and Christina McDonald. I am currently away from my family history records but as I recall, Archibald was born sometime around 1786. He died in Victoria Australia in 1871. His death certificate cited his mother as being Christina McCormack, but so too did his wife's death certificate and after some discussions with Ian Phillips, I am of the view that the parents (As mentioned above) are more likely to be his parents. When he left Mull for Australia, he travelled with his wife Flora (nee McIntyre) and four children on the New Zealander in 1853. They were in the 1841 and 1851 census records in Oskamull. As there has been some entries recently on the list about McDonald family members, I wondered if anyone had come across this family. Regards Libby McMillan
Dear Darryl, I notice, on rereading your postings, that the Christina McDonald in the 1841 census for Tyree is born in Scotland but the Christina McIntyre in the 1861 Mariposa census is born in Canada. Certainly an enumerator can make a mistake re place of birth. Too bad the 1851 Mariposa census is lost. Elizabeth.
Dear Jean, Many thanks for the new site. Another avenue is to google the names of the bride in quotes and the groom in quotes and then the county or township or both. Happy New Year. Elizabeth.
Sandra wrote > Most interesting to read your mail Les about the passengers being able to read and write. All Churchgoers I read too, wonder if that has anything to do with their capabilities. As the (primary) education system - Church/Parish or SPCK - was well established in Scotland by the 1850's most children were taught the basics of reading and writing. There would, of course, those who fell by the wayside. Even today we have people who just can't grasp the basics or are just too lazy to be bothered. Not necessarily ALL churchgoers. I should think that what is shown is their reply to the enumerator. Not all would be adherents to the faith they said and it would probably that in which they were brought up.. Regards Les

Dear Darryl, I guess I am not able to help you further. I understood that births, marriages and deaths registration began in Ontario in 1869, not the 1880's. In the first few years, the indexes on microfilm lump circa 1869 to 1874 all together as not all citizens complied initially. One other thought of what I have found occasionally. Sometimes a child in the family (eg perhaps Christina McDonald aged 6 in the 1841 census) has a different surname than the family. And sometimes this is because a teenage daughter of the family had a child out of wedlock, the child bears the father's surname, but the mother's family is raising it. I have found this two or three times. Happy New Year. All the best. Elizabeth.

Dear Don, Good to hear from you. Trust all is well with you and yours. Still putting plans together. Not that easy as I'm trying to coordinate trip with eldest son, daughter in law and granddaughter. Elizabeth and I are planning 10/14 days in New Zealand and approx 3 weeks based on Sydney where we are planning on renting a flat or similar as my younger son does not have enough accommodation for us all. I'm waiting to find out what, if any, internal flights will be included in our package so don't know whether a visit to Perth is on or not. All I do know is that we cannot fly via Perth. If we do get to Perth you will be the first to know and we will take up your kind offer. Happy New Year. Hi Elizabeth: I am just guessing that Christina McIntyre 22 is really Christina McDonald: Ronald MacDonald, late crofter at Heanish and Christina MacIntyre his wife had a daughter born 24/3/1835/ and bap. under the name Christina. Alex MacIntyre had acted as sponsor. And that this is her in 1841 (age 6): household - name - age - occupation - location - born in county 1841 census 786 McINTYRE Alexander 35 Crofter Kenvary Yes 786 McINTYRE Mary 30 Kenvary Yes 786 McINTYRE Catherine 12 Kenvary Yes 786 McINTYRE Marion 10 Kenvary Yes 786 McINTYRE Ann 8 Kenvary Yes 786 McINTYRE Mary 6 Kenvary Yes 786 McINTYRE Margaret 4 Kenvary Yes 787 McINTYRE Ann 60 Kenvary Yes 787 McINTYRE Malcolm 25 Crofter Kenvary Yes 787 McINTYRE Neil 25 tailor Kenvary Yes 787 McINTYRE Isabella 20 Kenvary Yes 787 McDONALD Christina 6 Kenvary Yes My John McDonald can be documented as born in Tiree and moving to Grey. I just haven't been able to find a definite link to his wife Christina (i.e. their marriage). His first child was born 1867 and Ontario civil registration began 1886. Perhaps the reason I can't find it is that this Victoria Christina was his wife and she was a Congregationalist.
