I have also run into this confusion of finding that family did not live where their descendants had been told they were "from". I think another explanation could be a confusion between where home was, and the port of embarkation. My wife's family said that when they emigrated to North America in 1776 they "came from Fort William". But they lived in GlenMoriston.
