Hi everyone, I'm researching the family of my great great grandfather, Alexander MacTaggart/McTaggert (married to Catherine McConnell). They moved from Clachan, Argyll to Islay c. 1872. They had 12 children, 9 were born on Islay and at least 2 are buried there. I'm based in Sydney, Australia and until I can get to Islay and the GRO in Edinburgh at the end of this year, any additional information is proving hard to come by. Alexander McTaggert married Margaret Macalester in Clachan, Kilcalmonell, 1825. They had 5 children, all born in Clachan. Neil (1827),Alexander (1831), Neil (1827), Samuel (1834), Margaret (1835), and Ann (1839). Alexander b.1831 married Catherine McConnell in 1864. They had 4 children, all born in Clachan between 1864 and 1871, Alexander, Samuel, Archibald and Jane. The family moved to Shore Street, Port Charlotte c. 1872. They had 8 more children between 1871 and 1888; Donald, Neil, Margaret, John, Duncan, Catherine, Ann and Mary. Alexanders occupation is listed at various times as a Crofter and a Distillery Manager. Samuel (my great grandfather) moved to Ballachulish. Alexander married Flora MacLillan in 1895 and had a son Alexander the same year. Archibald married Elizabeth Dick in 1897 and was a grocer and then a postmaster in Port Ellen c.1900, he died in 1907. They had 5 children between 1899 and 1905; Alexander, Archibald, James, John and Neil. Donald married Margaret MacLean in 1910 and was a tailor in Port Charlotte. They had 7 children between 1910 and 1922; Archibald, Connell, Catherine, Mary, Annie, Blair and Allister. John married Jessie MacGregor in 1915 Margaret married Malcolm McLeod in 1908 Duncan d.1962, buried in Port Charlotte Catherine d.1957 buried in Port Charlotte Mary married Donald MacMillan in 1924 Jane no trace Neil no trace Ann no trace I've a few more details on some of the people I've mentioned; if anyone thinks these may be helpful to them or you can help me, please get in touch. I'd also appreciate any suggestions how I may research the distillery, postmaster and tailor connections. Best Wishes Wend MacTaggart
