Regarding Bessie Williamson and Laphraoig, I remember being told that she had come to Islay from Glasgow in the 1930s as she had been suffering from tuberculosis and it was thought that the fresh air (and maybe the whisky fumes as well) would be good for her health. She was a graduate of the University of Glasgow. As Ian Hunter became more incapacitated through illness she gradually took over the running of the distillery and ultimately became Company Secretary, and after Hunter's death the owner. In the 1950s she married the singer Wishart Campbell "the golden voice of Canada" Elizabeth McAuslan
