Hello Everyone, Alice Johnston, nee McDougall, died in Canada on 29 February 1898 and is buried at Bethel Pioneer Cemetery. She was the second wife of Donald Johnston of Laphroaig (D:1844). How can I locate when Alice and her daughter Janet migrated from Islay to Canada? Are there any Canadian sites containing this information? Any suggestions much appreciated. John Gillies.
John, You could try inGenias -- http://www.ingeneas.com/ingeneas/main.html --they do not have everythhing but do have lots of records. They are the only Canadian immigration site I know of. I found my ggrandfather's emigration year (John Johnston) on the 1906 Alberta Census. I haven't found this info any other place. Since he came from the British Isles he wouldn't have been considered an "immigrant". I don't know if other provincial census' gathered this information. If you know Janet's surname during the 1901 Canadian Census you can look her up in the index at http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/index.html From there you can view the actual census using the split screen above the census index listing. Column 12 should reveal the year of immigration. Hope this helps.
