Hello List Members, It's been a while since I've sent in any requests, but I now have a request from an acquaintance that I've known for a few years. I know that I've seen Murchie information shared on this forum, so I hope it is okay to forward this inquiry on to this list. My friend has written me the following note: ... My cousin and I are going to Scotland in the Fall and I thought I would connect with you to see if you have any Murchie contacts in Scotland you could suggest we see. I have checked a lot on the birth places for the Murchies and find that the Isle of Arran is a central point for several of our direct line. Kilmory is a small town that we hope to visit to see if we can find any more data to go further back on our line. I guess we'll visit cemeteries, churches and if possible public record offices. I have come across on the Internet another person doing Murchie work. I'd really appreciate if you can lead us to any person or place you think would help our Murchie research while there ... The members of this ISLAY list are so full of information and so willing to share, that I thought you would be the best bet for the information. Unfortunately, I personally don't have any contacts that I can direct her to so if any of you have information that would be beneficial to her research and plans while she is in Scotland, and you'd be willing to share with her, you may contact me off~list at karma@networld.com. I would be happy to forward any information on to her. Thank you in advance for any and all your help!!! Warm Regards, Karma McPhie-Timmons U.S.A.
Oh my goodness, If you are going to be in Scotland, do book ahead for a day in the General Records Office in Edinburgh. The day pass fee may seem a bit steep but you will have access to so much -- in one place at one time, that it will be worth it. Find a clue, then pull the microfilm or fiche immediately; it's grand. Not only do they hold all the records for Scotland, but the research pass will give you a desk space big enough to let you spread out papers and really work. I found a ton of information on my own lines and my husband's all in one day. You can do some preliminary work on-line with the scotlandspeople website to make it even more advantageous to be there. Before that, be sure you have gathered every bit of information from the Islay pages -- http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~steve/islay/links.htm -- so you do not waste time (and money) on looking for what can be found there. Enjoy Scotland and good luck with your search.
