Hi Celia, Even though Islay was far from the cities of Scotland with their opportunities of higher education, it's my understanding that there were many teachers of considerable quality on the island. "Taylor" and "Hector McLean" come to mind; and on Ted's website you can read the journal of teacher Donald Sinclair, who was also an itinerant teacher. This is a particularly interesting view of Islay Life in the mid 1800s from the perspective of a teacher who struggled all through his life, often sending his own children out to work on area farms due to poverty. Islay's teachers produced a great number of accomplished writers and poets. Many of these banded together to form the Glasgow-Islay Association in 1862, whose function was to promote Gaelic literature, and also to provide aid to less fortunate Ileachs who came to Glasgow in hopes of finding work.
