    2. Toni Sinclair
    3. Hi folks, I recently received this message from a Kathy Johnston, who gave me permission to forward this to you. I haven't had much time to study the DNA project which my husband participated in (ie. Sinclair), but this adds a new dimension - the DNA study of Islay descendants. Have many of you done a test? Toni >Dear Toni: I have always been interested in my Johnston Y-DNA which does >not match any other Johnstons but seems to match the McKechnie and >McEachern Y-DNA more than the Johnstons. Johnston is supposed to be a >Scottish border clan but I >think my father's Johnston was Mc-Ian and >changed to Johnston as it was on the >island of Islay as you have suggested >in your postings. > >When I do a search engine, I find these names on the Island of Islay, so I >have a feeling that my father's Johnstons came from there or are related. >All I know is that >my Johnstons were from Scotland in the 1700s. My >Johnston is ID NEES7 at Y-search. > >When I look at your Sinclair name from Islay, there are many similarities >with my Johnston, though not very close. However, if you look at user ID > >EDHEE at Y-search, which is a McKechnie, the Sinclair seems to have more >numbers in common if carried out to 25 markers. If you look at the EDHEE >and >check to a genetic distance of 3, your Sinclair and my Johnston both >show up as a possible match each at 25 markers with a distance of 3. The >name McEachern >also appears which is a common name from the same clan as >McKechnie and both occurred on the island of Islay and can be found in the >same family. It is possible that the Y-DNA pre-dates the occurrence of >names. > >Could it be that we have discovered a possible modal type Y-DNA from > >Islay? Other names that are found on the island of Islay that have >similar Y-DNA markers are Barr and Clark. The names Stewart, Brown, Cain >(or similar) >have also been found on the island of Islay and some people >with these names >have markers in common with EDHEE. They are not >necessarily from this island, >but it would be interesting to see if these >DNA markers match those names who >were from Islay. > >Have there been others from Islay that have been Y-DNA tested? > >Feel free to share this information with others from Islay. > >Tell me what you think.
