My sympathy to you on the death of your Mother. There are a couple of us (including Monta Salmon and I) who have been gathering Islay McCuaig info for years with hopes to sort them out/connect them. What I have accumulated on your family is below. Please note that the data is as it was collected, and not verified. I would appreciate any further info you can share that can be added to the Islay McCuaigs database. Sheila Dedrick sdedrick@mts.net might be related to you. You can follow a series of emails in the archives http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/SCT/SCT-ISLAY.html - search on "Malcolm McCuaig" in 2003 - there is specific information about the Daniel Rankin's history. It's interesting to find more McCuaigs turned McLeods, now too with your family in NZ. It happened repeatedly in my McCuaigs after they emigrated to Canada and there is one family who stayed on Islay where part of the family became McLeod and the rest remained McCuaig. My theory isn't documented or provable...McCuaigs are generally thought to be a sept to Clan McLeod of Skye.....except those on Islay which was Clan Donald/McDonald. I believe it's possible that the original Islay McCuaig came to Islay as part of the 'parliament' of the Lords of the Isles and were originally from Skye's McLeods. When they emigrated, some felt strongly enough about their heritage to change their name to indicate their origins while others kept the name they'd been born with. The family folklore that I'd heard decades ago, before I started researching seriously, was that when my grandfather emigrated in 1851, his brothers who emigrated with him chose to be McLeods and that he said "McCuaig" was good enough for him on Islay so a McCuaig he'd remain. A couple of his children later chose to change their surname to McLeod, particularly those who migrated to western USA. Do you know if your McCuaigs became McLeod prior to emigration to NZ? Hi Sue, Thank you for your reply re.our McCuaig's, on thinking i think I would rather be McCuaig than McLeod. I talked to people on Islay about the name change and the thought there was that at the time that whisky was to be taxed that a change of name helped avoid the back payments but we will most likely never know. We looked at a notice board in a new browery that had the list people caught and had to pay back taxes and there were a few McCuaig names. From memory there were no names that I have but I will go back to the photo and have another look. I feel that our family were crofters and may not have been involved in making a great lot of whisky. I have as follows. John McCuaig son of Malcolm McLeod & Janet Stewart b 1795 Ireland. d Ma rch 1861 Islay. & Elizabeth McLeod gaughter of William McLeod & Christina Graham. b 1794 Islay. d11 July 1880 West Taieri, New Zealand. You will note that this is not the same as the 1841 censes, it is taken fron a small booklet that was printed here in NZ in 1989. There seems to be no mention of Agnus, I wonder why ?.
