When the discussion first started on this list I happened to be on Tiree at the A Bhuain gathering and asked one of their archivists about the McKechnie/McEachern question. He said that in both cases the Gaelic refers to horses. However I don't know if the derivation you have found for McKichan does as well (though I notice that in the case of a McKichan who married into the McGilvrays in Islay that his name morphed into McEachern over the decades).
