    3. Hi Pail, I was looking up for myself last night when i saw your mail to the islay List. As Dixie mentioned the Scotlands People site is excellent, and well worth spending a bit of dosh! However if you can narrow your search years down a little your money will not disappear so fast. Herman I would of thought in Scotland was not such a common name not like searching for a John or Donald! I had a quick look on a few free sites for England and Wales and saw your Herman born December 1882 in Todmorden Yorkshire. He is also on the 1901 census in Todmorden aged 18. His son Herman Foreshaw was also born in England in 1908 at Stockport, so that takes you a little further on from 1900. Ann (North Wales)

    3. To Ann and also Dixie, Thanks very much for replying to my message.I have had a look at the Scotlands people site and I think that my Dawsons are going to be too recent to feature there. I think I am going to have to resort to records such as Memorial inscriptions,Newspaper archives,Telephone Directorys, etc. I was also hoping that someone on the list who lives in Islay may have remembered the family living there and so have some personal details/memories of them. Do either of you have any idea as to how I go about finding any of this type of information? Do you know what the local churches/cemetaries would be to Leorin , Kildalton ? Is there a local Newspaper that would have maybe carried an Obituary for the funerals? It puzzles me as to how the family ended up in Islay at all. The family is originally from Lancashire and Yorkshire and I have the family in census records from 1901 back to 1851 in these two countys. There is a family story that says that the Dawson's owened the land that was Compulsory Purchased for the building of the BBC Pebble Mill Studios in Birmingham and that the funds recieved from this sale financed the purchase of the farm in Islay.I have yet to find any evidence of this story but how do you end up going from Birmingham to Islay? If either of you know on anyone who is local to Islay and may have local more recent family history knowledge - I would love to get in contact with them. I currently live in Indianna USA although my home is in Mid Wales and so making a trip to Islay to "have a look" is not possible at the moment. Thanks again for the advice so far and I hope to hear from you again Best regards Paul ----- Original Message ----- From: "ann" <aqtu56@dsl.pipex.com> To: <SCT-ISLAY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, March 06, 2006 8:53 AM Subject: [SCT-ISLAY] FOR PAUL PNDER > Hi Pail, > > > I was looking up for myself last night when i saw your mail to the islay > List. > > As Dixie mentioned the Scotlands People site is excellent, and well worth > spending a bit of dosh!
