In 1900 found a Neil Head, born Dec 1863, Scotland, in Plainfield N.J. married to Margaret, born April 1866 - no children -----Original Message----- From: Alasdair Heads [mailto:al_heads@yahoo.com] Sent: Friday, March 31, 2006 8:27 AM To: SCT-ISLAY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [SCT-ISLAY] once they're in america... what's the best way to find more info? It looks like some of my family emigrated to New York about the turn of last century. The Ellis island records have Scotch US citizens Anne Head, Neil, Mary and ?Nin arriving in October 1904 on return tickets. They're going to husband D Head's home at 520 West 51st in New York. My problem is that I don't believe it shound be D Head - how do I check US records (without having to pay massively to ancestry.com?) Y'see I think they could be family of Neil (misspelt as Niel) Head that Ellis Island lists as arriving in 1896 on the Campania aged 30. Sadly Ellis Isle's link to the original manifest is'nt right. Any help appreciated PS in 1904 young Neil has his occupation as Blue printer?? ideas
Lynn, thanks very much for what you've given me, it all fits nicely with what I already have. Neil Head b1863 is the elder brother of William Ferguson Head b1865. Got them both on the 1881 scottish census as mill workers aged 16& 17. Both being sons of Neil b1817 Persabus' 2nd marriage. It seems when old Neil died (1883), his family started to move across to New York. William F arrived 15.11.1887 on the Furnessia from Glasgow and his wife, daughter Janet and son Niel(sp) arrived 15.5.1888 on the Circassia suspected young Neil (on the Campania 1896), and are sure about his widow Agnes, daughter Agnes and possibly granddaughter Sarah (all 3 arrive on the Furnessia in 1894) William's wife is Maggie/Margaret Corbett m 1885 Johnstone, Scotland. Daughter of Samuel Corbett and Euphemia Spence. And there's part of the problem with the 1904 group of passengers, they're returning from a visit to Johnstone, (where possibly 2 other Head sisters remained?) but the names and ages don't exactly fit with anyone I know of. Shame it seems to be dead(ish) end when there was a lovely NY address. However, you've addded the American born Agnes to my list, as well as giving me a wife for Neil 1863 thanks a lot. --- Lynn Seamark <Lmseamark@newhudson.com> wrote: > In 1900 found a Neil Head, born Dec 1863, Scotland, > in Plainfield N.J. > married to Margaret, born April 1866 - no children > and > William F.
