Hi Seann I don't remember who had the original post but I don't think it was meant specificially as an advert - at least I didn't take it that way. While it was off the topic of genealogy, I interpreted it as a 'heads up'. There are a number of people on the list who are related to people who owned/worked at Islay distilleries so the opportunity to stay in a cottage that they perhaps had lived in might be considered a special experience. The distilleries are very much intertwined with Islay's history. There have been requests from folks planning their first Islay visit who need to know about accommodations and we have shared our experiences - which is something quite different from advertising a personal property. Does this mean we can all advertise our own wee holiday cottages as well? Seann, I heartily agree with Sue. I daresay virtually everyone on the Islay list either has or wants to visit Islay sometime. One of the stumbling blocks is the cost of accomodation - most of the self-catering options are only economical for groups of several people. Knowing about accomodation owned by someone who shares an interest in family history (and at a reasonable price) is definitely 'on topic' in my opinion. In this case 'advertising' is not a dirty word - it is sharing information that we would have a difficult time finding out otherwise. Hi Sue, Yes I do agree with you that the distilleries had a lot of influence with the people of Islay. My family was very much involved with Laphroaig and Lugavullin Distilleries. It was only in the 1950's that Laphroaig distillery was the end of the family ownership. But you can read more about it on the Islay site.
