    3. Hello Ashley, By now you should have some photos which I have sent you off-list. I would much appreciate a copy of the TIF file of the death record of Ann McEwan. She is definitely ours, despite all the age discrepancies, and the parentage you have is correct. I have a death record for Catherine McNiven MS McIntyre who died on 2nd May 1873 and whose death was reported by her son-in-law John McEwan. Catherine's parents were John McIntyre and Ann McIndeor which I got from the same source. I have never been able to find a birth record for Ann other than a vague memory that she was from Kildalton parish. I don't have anything further back than Hugh McEwan but you are correct about the parents of Sarah Kenedy which I also got from her death record in 1862. Re the five sons of John McEwan, I had suspected that there might have been infant or child deaths involved. It was very common for a subsequent child to be given the same name as a pre-deceased sibling. So that's just one to find. Of course, pre-1855 there was no statutory duty to register a birth/baptism and it cost money to do so. As a result I suspect that many infant deaths simply resulted in the births never being recorded. As far as Annie is concerned I find the parentage listed on her marriage certificate very persuasive so I am sure you are on the right lines there. Agnes the witness could have been a daughter of any of them. Again it was a common name and interchangeable with Nancy and Ann so it is likely that if there was more than one Ann in the family, which there was, one of them would be called Agnes or Nancy. Given the age of your grandfather John from the census details there is no doubt that a birth record will exist. Well it would never do if it was all too easy!! It certainly looks as though Malcolm's death might have been the trigger for John being "farmed out" to his aunt and uncle in Glasgow. In the next generation my own grandmother brought up a nephew with her own children. Toni is the expert on the McNokaird link and I have a copy of a paper she has written about it. Perhaps she can give you a link. Otherwise I will copy it for you. I would certainly be happy to receive copies of any relevant records you have and I am happy to reciprocate but I haven't investigated any on-line linkage yet. Best wishes, Iain
