    3. My MacQuilkans at Kilchoman changed back & forth with names over the years, most of the census records show them as McQuilkans but I know I have one year they were listed as Wilkieson's, a grandson that same census was listed as Wilkie (? just the enumerator abbreviating) & later my ancestor James McQuilkan used Wilkinson when marrying in Glasgow, his children took the name Wilkinson (both migrating to Australia). Other siblings also used Wilkinson or similar names when they headed to the mainland. I never take spellings very seriously & so search for all the variations I can think of when looking for McQuilkans. Originally I couldn't find James (listed above) because I only knew him as James Wilkinson & so had trouble locating his birth on Islay where he had claimed to be born. Once I used a soundex search it appeared under mcQuilkan. My grandfather was still alive at that time & when I told him this alternate name for his grandfather he recognised it & I searched for more of the family. I don't know a lot about the DNA project, so if someone can send me more info I will participate if practicable. Regards, Angela Richmond
