I think there would possibly have been some mention in the Oban Times and may have some information in their archives. Another possibility would be to check if there were any entries in the 'Register of Corrected Entries' which provides details of the outcome of any inquiries or reports from the procurator fiscal regarding sudden deaths/accidents. The ROCE are held at Register House in Edinburgh and may be on the Scotlandspeople website, but I'm not 100% certain of that. I will not be in there for a few weeks, but if you have no luck before then, let me know and I'll check them out when I'm in. I was not aware of that story before. I searched and found the death records for all the drowning victims on "Scotland's People", and the four MacLellans mentioned (Archibald who walked back and John, Janet, and Margaret who drowned) were all distant cousins by marriage to my wife, Lorna MacLellan. The four MacLellans mentioned in the drowning story were all the children of Dugald MacLellan, Slate Quarrier at Tormisdale, and his wife Barbara, maiden surname Ferguson. The official death records all show the date of death to be 15 November 1879. If anyone knows where I could read more about this tragedy, I would appreciate having the information.
