    3. Hello again, Listers! Just wondering if someone can tell me if McKECHNIE is a variant spelling of McEACHERN? I have an ancestor who is a McKECHNIE from Islay but I haven't found that surname in the census that I've searched so far for Islay. Is anyone familiar with the surname McKECHNIE from Islay? Thanks, Diana in British Columbia, Canada

    3. Hi Diana, First let me answer your McKechnie - McEachern question - with notes I keep in my McKechnie family file: McKechnie is the english spelling of the family name. There are a number of variations in the spelling that have been found in the records. Variation are due to the translation of the McKechnie name from gaelic to english plus the accuracy and literacy (or lack thereof) of transcribers - both original transcription, through the years and current transcriptions. The most common spelling of our McKechnie family as found in the Islay, Scotland OPR records on Steves Islay site was...McKichan. The other spellings which were found: McKeachan, McKeachen, McKechnie, McKeichan, McKiachan, McKichan, McMichan + a few with Mac vs Mc. That being said, I have conducted extensive research on my McKechnie family in Islay and Ontario (mainly Cheltenham, Chinguacousy Twp. and Toronto) including those that have relocated from those two geographical areas to other parts of Scotland and North America. The earliest McKechnie record we have located start with Neil McKechnie and Martha Smith on Islay in the mid to late 1700's. Three sons of Neil and Martha immigrated to Ontario - Duncan (to Cheltenham 1831), Archibald (to Snelgrove, Chinguacousy Twp. 1833) and Donald (to Priceville Ontario 1847). If these names strike a cord with you then maybe we can help you. By the way I have a data base of all the Ontario Birth, Marriage and Deaths registrations from 1869 to the most current year of release (which varies depending on B-M-D). Islay farms that my McKechnie family worked on Islay were Daill, Gortanilivorrie and Gartloist, all located near Bowmore. One son of Neil and Martha was a tailor in Bowmore (Duncan) .One grandson returned to Islay to die - he died in Smaull. You do not mention first names nor Islay locations in your email so I covered the waterfront in my response. If we can help you do not hesitate to ask.
