Speaking from personal experience,when my mother died on Islay 1949,there was a service at the house,then the men accompanied the hearse to the cemetery for burial,the women remained at the house,and prepared a meal for their return,.this was the custom. next day the women of the family visited the cemetery to pay their last respects. attending funerals of aunts/uncles in late fifties both men and women were present.
