Dear Lorne: There was a Buie family in Grey County who was also from Islay. I’m not sure if this family is related to Captain John Buie who died in Arran Township, Bruce County in 1874 at age 93. I found the following obituary for a John Buie who died in 1927. Death of Mr John Buie Jan 26 1927 Early Lake Mariner Died in Township of Collingwood Collingwood: Jan 26 -- John Buie passed away at him home in Singhampton last Wednesday. His death followed a slight stroke of paralysis with which he was seized just before Christmas. Mr Buie was born in Islay, Scotland and had just passed his 90th birthday. When a child of eight years his parents came to Canada to this section of the Province, settled in the Township of Osprey on the farm on the northwest corner of the tenth line and the Nottawasaga townline. With his father and brothers he joined in clearing the farm but upon reaching young manhood he followed his brother Duncan and Donald to the lakes where he engaged in sailing for many years. Forty two years ago he returned to the land and until five years ago when he moved into Singhampton, followed the occupation of farming. Of his five brothers and two sisters there is but one, Hugh, of Osprey now living. Mr Buie saw much of the pioneer life of Osprey and Nottawasaga districts. He was there as a boy and knew something of the privations and the hardships. He also experienced the difficulties of early sailing on the lakes and he learned by hard knocks the ups and downs of the life of the mariners when the occupation was far from enjoying the comforts and aids of today. On the 1851 Census for Osprey Township, Grey County I found the family of Buies on pages 5 and 7.
