Hi Norma- The dust of the holidays finally has settled somewhat, and I am now getting back to you regarding my Islay Johnston connections. There's just one: Anne Johnston, b. abt 1792, baptised 30 Aug 1794 to Alexander Johnston & Mary Graham of Taicaramagan, Kildalton Parish. Married Colin Campbell of Mulindry, Kilarrow Parish, 22 Feb 1816, Kilarrow Parish. She apparently already was widowed by the time of the the 1841 census. Anne emigrated to Bruce County, Ontario in the 1860s or 1870s with some of her offspring and their families, . Anne Johnston and Colin Campbell were my g-g-g-grandparents through their oldest child, Mary Campbell, who married Alex McDougall of Kilbride, Kildalton in 1842. Alex Johnston and Mary Graham had three sons in addition to Anne; Ronald 1784, William 1790, and Donald, who was the youngest of the children. The real Johnston expert of this list is Sheila Kronenberger of Illinois. She is descended from Donald, and has done extensive work on the family. Also, I believe that John McFarlane, also of this list, has Johnston connections through his wife's family. Who are your Johnston connections, Norma? How do they fit in with all this? Steffenie Pennsylvania
I wish I knew as much as you about my decedents. This is what I know about my ggrandfather: John Johnston born about Jan 12, 1833, emigrated to Canada around mid 1850s, may have departed from Greenock after staying with a relative. parents: John Johnston and Agnes Mc... looks like McLoc on a marriage cert, but we always thought that a McLean was in our family. He always said he was from Islay. I know a lot about his after he came to Canada, but it is his Scottish roots that I would like to delve into. Wish I had more. As your Alexander Johnston and Mary Graham did not have a John, perhaps a relative of Alexander did. I have a photo of my ggrandfather which I've put up on the web at: www3.telus.net/artnorma/johnston. We've always wondered if this was taken somewhere on Islay. If you do not have any information that would fit into this, perhaps someone you recommended does. If you don't want to give out their e-mail, feel free to forward this on to anyone!! thks very much for your response. I have an Isabella Campbell from Kildalton who married an Alexander McDougall in 1838. Isabella was born about 1820 and was over 20 years younger than Alexander. They had 2 daughters, Margaret b. 1838 and Ann b. 1840. Alexander McDougall died in 1843. Any connection? Celia.
