I am trying to trace my elusive grandfather, Hugh Stewart (b. 1846) of Kildalton, Islay. He joined the army at 17 into the 73rd Foot (which later became the Black Watch) June 1864 to Nov. 6, 1876 and qualified as a Chelsea Pensioner. He was listed in various census records as a Mason's Labourer. He married Catherine McEwing in Campbeltown on Dec. 3, 1885. My father, Robert McEwing Stewart was born on July 25, 1886 in Campbeltown. There is no further record of Hugh Stewart..no census, no death records. I am trying to find out what happened to him. Hoped to find when his Chelsea Pension stopped, indicating his death, but no luck there. He suffered from tuberculosis so unlikely that he emigrated. Can anyone assist me? His father was John Stewart, b. 1814 on Islay and was a Tinsmith. Mother was Mary McCaig b. 1816, d. 1872 in Bowmore (her parents were Donald McCaig and Betsy Brown). His siblings - Robert b. 1844; John b. 1848; Mary b. 1850; Susan b. 1854. Both Robert and John were in the Police force in Glasgow. Robert died in the Bowmore Poorhouse of tuberculosis (sister Mary had died at age 16 of TB). Hoping to smash my brickwall! Thank you! Lola Cook (nee McEwing) lola.cook@shaw.ca
