An excerpt from “The Scots Magazine, 1st July 1825 Islay. – Mr Campbell, of Shawfield, has for some time had an intention of introducing manufactures into Islay. Some heads of families, weavers at Pollokshaws, sent him a letter on the subject, and they were in due time favoured with an encouraging answer. The buildings are now erecting near Port-Ascaig, and about eight miles from Bowmore, the capital of the island. Ten heads of families belonging to Pollokshaws are engaged.” >From wikipedia: Pollokshaws was originally a village predominantly dedicated to weaving in the 1600s. A group of Flemish weavers were brought to the area in the 1800s by the landowners, the Maxwells of Pollok on account of their exceptional weaving skills..... Pollokshaws was a burgh until 1912 when it was annexed to the City of Glasgow.
