This is what makes this list special, everyone is so helpful.  I love it.And although I can't link to the McAulays, my 1st cousin 4 times removed, Hugh Stevenson farmed at Laggan until his death in 1884.  He wasn't born on Islay, and went there at a time which was difficult for the crofters. Your information is much appreciated and we can now move on. Our only outstanding point is what happened to Ann Ross. We could not understand how my grandfather got to Islay at such an early age but we now believe his father returned to Islay and then married Marion who obviously did not know about William or would not accept him. We also heard through the family that William carried peat to distilleries which would tie in with what you have found, the other story we heard relates to my grandfather selling a piece of ground near the round church in Bowmore.
