The paternal (Y-DNA) of many inhabitants of the Inner and Outer Hebrides is neither Irish (Dalriadan) nor Scottish (Pictish) but instead is Viking DNA (Haplogroup R1A1A). This DNA is shared with about half the population of Iceland and around twenty-five per cent of the population of Norway and reflects the conquest of the area by the Vikings in the ninth century. Protestantism did not exist in any significant numbers in Northern Ireland until after 1600. Everyone in England, Scotland, and Ireland was Roman Catholic until circa 1540.
