    3. Yup Sorry Linda, It is the Book of Names created by the Ordnance Survey Team when they were recording Islay in 1878 which I transcribed into the ICD, took over a year still its done. The Book gives a location of the farm what its name is derived from and some authorities or locals who confirmed these facts to the Royal Engineer in charge. The rest of the data I transcribed from the Rentals of Islay which Chronilogically explains the development and demise of the farms of Islay. I suspect you actually mean KINTRA : A large Farmsteading built of stone and slated, situated 3/4 mile South West of Machry and 1-3/4 mile North West from Cornabus (B of N 35/p74) Meaning - Head of the Strand - Authorities Mr Duncan Logan, Port Ellen - Mr Peter Carmichael, Machry - Mr John McNab, Kintraw, Occupier - Mr John Smith, Shepherd - (Poole, surveyor) & (Alex Chisholm C.A.) Present owner Mr. Hamish McTaggart, has farmed Kintra for 50 years taking over from his father who moved from Kilchiaran/Cladville farms to here in 1917. Purchasing the farm from the Ramsays in 1922. Mrs Hamish McTaggart is a Gaelic Teacher and works on the mainland. Slates of old barn now gone, were from Kilchiaran. Present buildings appear to be West Highland slate and ? Islay West Highland slate. The original layout of the Machry Golf course which lay on the South side of the Kintra River has now been returned to the Farm of Kintra and the Course re-designed. The topography of Islay does not supply many 'gills' and as a farm-name it only occurs in the simple form, 'Giol' 'Gill' and there is a deep ravine running from the houses to the shoreline. This was probably the family of Donald MacKay, of Giol, as these were all people from the Oa that John Ramsay visited in Canada, to satisfy himself of their well-being. 1876/7 Giol & Glenastle rental to John Philips at £360 15s No8400. (Valuation rolls). 1903 Rental House and Farm of Giol & Glenastle to Mrs Angus Campbell, Andrew and James Campbell of 2,080 acres at £130. 59 cattle, 10 horses, 234 sheep also 4 houses at Giol and Glenastel 3 at £4 10-s and 1 £3 10s on a 15 year lease.
