Hi all SueVisser's recent note to the list regarding her 10th anniversary as an Islay 'Lister"'just awakened me to the fact that I also celebrate 10 years on the list, albeit not until June. It also is the time for me to confess a bad thing I did about that time ! Sometime between joining the list on June 13, 2000, and attending the first Islay Gathering in Guelph, on July 15, 2000, a very kind lister provided me with details of a particular tombstone. Thrilled as I was to have received the tombstone information, I took it with me to the Guelph Gathering and it hasn't been seen since ! I had not even thanked the sender and was too ashamed at the time to appeal to the list to track down that person. For several years now, I have been secretly crediting Jana Ramsay Best, granddaughter of John Ramsay of Kildalton, but in recent conversation with Mrs. Best I have established that it was not she, so I am a complete loss ! At the beginning of the note I received, the writer explained that only a part of the tombstone inscription was visible as much of it had already sunk well into the ground, however the visible text reads . . . Erected by Janet MacCuaig In memory of her Loving husband John Campbell who drowned... (I'm paraphrasing here, of course, but one thing is certain, there was no visible date) .... The writer went on to tell me that should I visit the Kilnaughton Cemetery, I should be aware the stone is not in the churchyard, but inside the ruins of the chapel, up against the wall. I would very much like to be in touch with the person who so kindly provided me with this information and have the opportunity to apologize. If this person is still on the list, I would very, very much appreciate hearing from them either via the list or directly to my e-mail [email protected] Thanks Helen Campbell Blair
