Looking for connections to my John McKenzie a slater/plasterer born Glasgow 1811 whose parents and siblings are still in hiding after a six year search. DNA matches with three persons in US and Canada and Scotland who all hail from Islay so thought I'd post to the list in the hope someone out there by some miracle can shed any light. John married Marion Gardiner followed by Margaret Thomson with one son to Marion a James b1846 a potter and five children Anne John Margaret Jane and Jessie to Margaret. I am a direct descendant of this John. Many descendants still living in the same area of Glasgow to this day. I have a copy of tree of my US cousin but we're unable to make a connection. Ruth, Since you are new to this list, you might not be aware that our previous list master, Ted Larson, did a huge amount of work recording Islay births, deaths and marriages, and they are free for access to everyone at: http://freepages.family.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~tedlarson/bdm (I think I got this right). I think that in the all-Islay parishes - baptisms , there are less than 100 McKenzie children baptised. Then you can narrow down to the families by looking at father's names and mother's. Although it's not written in stone, your John McKenzie might have named his first son after his father (the traditional Scottish naming pattern). It might help to identify your Islay ancestor. Sadly, not all Islay parish church registers go back as far as you would like. I am trying to search a Daniel Sinclair from Kilchoman parish who married a Flora McKenzie around 1820, but the parish registers there don't start until 1822. No proof! Then they emigrated to the Carolinas. However, I see that there are a few other McKenzie families in the other parishes where records start earlier than Kilchoman. Please check them out - some names might pop out at you, and give you a clue to follow. Good luck!
