    1. [SCT-ISLAY] Duncan McAulay born Islay 1787 - 1790
    2. PAUL D MACAULEY
    3. Hi, I have been researching my MacAulay genealogy for a number of years now and the trail has lead me to Islay. My GGrandfather, Angus MacAulay, emigrated from Glasgow in 1856 after the death of his Scottish wife, Catherine Millegan and started over in Chester, Pennsylvania, in the US. He was, by trade, an ornamental plasterer. Early on in my searching, I found the following 1999 post on a message board: MACAULAYS IN PENNSYLVANIA A friend of mine purchased a copy of the rules of discipline for the Society of Friends of Philadelphia, published 1838. The book was originally purchased at the book shop of John Mulhern in West Chester, Pennsylvania (Chester County). Inside are penned three names: "Angus MacAulay/ Plasterer/ Edinborough Scotland/ 1875" and "Duncan MacAulay/ Rachel McLearan/ Born Kilnehearn/ Island of Isla." Elsewhere is written "Angus MacAulay/ Glasgow" and "Chester" (presumably Chester, Delaware County, PA). I assume the MacAulays were immigrants and likely Quakers (I find it hard to believe that the book was sold in Pennsylvania, sent to Scotland and returned to the U.S., but it's possible). I don't know what to make of it all, but I hope it helps someone. I was able to contact the poster in about 2003 but he didn't remember the post or who owned the copy of my GGrandfather's book. I found a record of Angus' birth to Duncan McAulay and Rachel McLellan in St. Cuthbert's, Edinburgh, on 19 March 1825. (His American records show his correct birthday, 19 March, but rather in 1835.) He was listed in the 1841 census living with his father, Duncan, age 50 in Glasgow. Angus' occupation was shown as plasterer and his father's as joiner. I found a record of Rachel's death in 1839 where Duncan was again listed as a joiner. The 1851 census shows Duncan, age 60, living with his children Mary, John and Margaret, and Jean, a niece, in Barony, Lanarkshire. This census shows him born Islay, Argyll. I have not seen the actual census image as it is not available on the Scotland's People site - the information I have is a summary of the image from Ancestry.com and from a friend in Scotland. The 1861 census image shows his age to be 63, still a joiner and born Kilchoman, Islay. As the ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 years in the 1841 census, he would have been born 1787 to 1791. The 1851 census would have him born in 1790, or thereabouts, and the 1861 census places his birth date around the year 1798. So far, I haven't been able to positively establish his birth date or his birth place on Islay or the names of his parents through a record in the OPRs. If anyone has any information about Duncan or Rachel or any ideas to help further my search, I would be very greatful to hear from you. Thanks, Paul MacAuley
