    1. [SCT-ISLAY] SCANLON - KIRK
    2. Knowing there is a large Canadian contingent on the list, maybe someone can point me in the right direction. I have MARTIN SCANLON (family had Islay connections, but not sure exactly where Martin was born) who emigrated to Canada in 1927 on the S.S.Melita., aged 18. He married MABEL KIRK at some time, and then later returned to Scotland. In 1942 he married ELIZABETH MAITLAND in Glasgow, so MABEL must have been deceased or divorced by then. I can find no record of the elusive MABEL in the Scottish records, so it seems likely that the marriage took place in Canada, and probably also her death/divorce. My question is, are there any Canadian records I can search on line that may shed some light on this? Many thanks, David Clarke.

    3. David: Most marriages that are on line on ancestry go to only 1926, death records only go to 1934. If you know the province the marriage took place you can write vital stats and get the marriage that way. 3. You could try this site http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=collectionDetails;c= 1307826 It lists Ontario deaths to 1947 (but I very much doubt it lists all of them). Seems public enough, but I've never tried searching for any. jim

    3. David, Don't assume that Mabel had died or had a formal divorce. Divorce was out of the reach of ordinary folks at that time as it required an Act of Parliament. The marriage may have simply broken up, and Martin moved back to Scotland and gotten married again. I have two instances of this in my immediate family. Formally the second marriage was bigamy, but I guess people just kept quiet about it. The bigamist lied on the second marriage certificate, claiming to be single.
