    3. John, I can't add much for you, except for some "geography". I lived for a month in 1996 on Seil Island, a small island a few miles SW of Oban and separated from the mainland by a bit of ocean which can be jumped across at low tide near its northern point at the arched stone bridge built by Telfer at Clachan. Near the south end of Seil (which is about 10 miles long, as the crow flies), Luing lies off its eastern shore, separated from Seil by a very narrow pass about the same width as the one between Islay and Jura. The tide sweeps through this pass at up to about 10 knots almost all the time, first one way, then the other, with an extremely short "slack water" period. We took our car over on the small ferry -- an exciting ride! Luing is now populated almost exclusively by black cattle and their human tenders, and is about 2 miles long and 1 mile wide. Going back to Seil Island, there is a town on its east coast called Balvicar (close to Easdale on the west coast, site of the filming of "Ring of Bright Water", and formerly site of a large slate mine [now flooded] which provided slate for pavements and roofs all over the world). I mention this because of your reference below to Ballivicar. If you were not aware of this location, you might give it some thought. They were at Ballivicar 1811. Children I know of were Duncan - Mary - Dugald - Flora. She probably died pre 1841. I have always assumed she was born Islay abt 1785 but never found a baptism. Now I see Carmichaels may have come over from Luing. Does anyone know which parish covers Luing? Any connections out there? JOHN SHAW AUCKLAND NZ. -------------------------------
