    3. Hi, Ila: I need a bit more info before I can help you.  My McDougall family started out with the name McLugash but when they went to mainland Scotland, they changed it to McDougall.  You will find that some McLugashes changed to McDougall (the clan name) while others changed to Douglas (Lord of the Isles) but others kept the name I do have an Archibald McLugash in my family. My great, great grandfather, ArchibaldMcDougald is thought to b the first child born in this country. We are rather sure that they sailed from Jura or Isla. The father of Arch is thought to be DAniel. Any information?

    3.  Hi, Iain McIntosh, it's been a long time since we talked.  Happy New Year to you and your family. I was going through some old emails and I wonder if you would enlarge on the following: Allan McDougall married Mary CAskie and had seven children two of whom were named Mary and Margaret respectively.  According to your email, you claim that one of your Ferguson families are related through Mary's sister Margaret who married Peter Ferguson of Portnahaven.  Do you have any more info on Peter Ferguson?  RegardsJanet (Ontario)

    3. Hello to all. I have joined the mailing list as my history research has led back to Islay. My interest is in discovering more about Mary Macmillan who married Alexander Cameron (of Glasgow) in Cambuslang, November 1854. The 1881 census shows that Mary McMillan came from Islay - I assume she was born there. Bruce Cameron

    3. Sorry all, it seems I cut off the first half of my previous message. It's this computer, I swear. It highlights text and before I even know it, I've deleted half an email! It made me address the wrong person as well. I swear. Anyway, for anyone interested who didn't visit that website, the first part should have read: Roger, I thought you might be interested in knowing that the taxation of the whiskey stills began in 1644 with the passage of the Excise Act. But it wasn't until 1797 that a Royal Excise man was brave enough to set foot on Islay! For over 150 years, the excise men refused to go to Islay because of the natives' reputation for being a wild and barbarous lot. Oooh, there's that tingly feeling again! 3. I don't know about you, but it makes my heart swell with pride in the knowledge that my ancestors were among a great people who struck fear in the hearts of men through legend alone. But with all that whiskey being made and tested, of course, they might not have noticed. heheheh I pilfered that info from this site, which is a really great site, if you haven't seen it already: http://www.islayinfo.com/islay_whisky_history.html

It is his Christmas gift to his followers. My great-great grandparents, Margaret McPhee and Donald Niven lived on Shore Street, the curving street of houses along the shore where he died in 1864. He was a shoemaker. She came to Canada with her five young children in 1865. 3. Roger The Statistical Accounts of Scotland are good to have a look at for the history and general feel of the place. There are accounts for 1791-99 and 1834-45. You can look at them here http://stat-acc-scot.edina.ac.uk/sas/sas.asp?action=public& and you can choose to look by county or area i.e. Argyle or Kildalton etc. They are usually very informative and can tell a lot about a place at those particular times. Good luck with your research and Merry Christmas Regards Christina Johnston ------------------------------- Quoting the entire text of a previous message in a reply is poor netiquette. 3. Hello Roger, I am still new to Islay and Kintyre genealogy, but I recently read that some of my ancestors quite possibly operated stills to supplement their income. When the king introduced a tax on whisky production, I believe an excise man’s job was to seek out this illicit industry so it makes perfect sense that an excise man would be living and working in a place that is still famous for its whisky production. 1. [SCT-ISLAY] Islay History, 1840-1870...especially 1850's
    2. Roger Lamborne via
    3. I have many ancestors from Islay who immigrated to the USA (Mobile, Alabama) in the 1850-52 time period. Does anyone know how I can find Islay history for that time period that may give clues as to why they may have left Scotland.....famine....poor soil...no jobs etc. Many were McKerrells (Mckerral, Meckerrol). My direct ancestor Jane McKerrell had a baby by George Lamborne in 1851. Per the Kildaton Registers, Birth record: Duncan, son of George Lambourn (sic) and Jane McKerrel (sic), born 30th June 1851." She then left for America under her maiden name with her family. She was descended from the Dallas and McDougald families. George Lamborne was supposedly a British Excise officer? Does that make sense.....what would he have been doing in Port Ellen? Suggestions and comments please on where to go from here....are there professional genealogists in Islay I can contact to help with research? 1. [SCT-ISLAY] Best wishes to all for the New Year
    2. Philip Hubsmith via
    3. Hi List, You could say I am a 'sleeping' member of the Mailing List, but I do read every message and it is great to see the interest from all over the world. I started research some time ago and received great help/information from Sue and Roger. The research is now put on hold and will be done as a retirement project in the near future. I feel that it is so absorbing and requires full attention and adequate time. As a matter of interest: The focus of my initial research was my Great Grand Parents: Hugh McFadyen, Born Bowmore 1835 Died 17/4/1907 & Elizabeth Morrison, Born Bowmore 1841 Died 6/12/1922. They moved to Dumbarton on the Clyde around 1860's for work in the ship building industry and eventually moved up the River Clyde to Clydebank. I can go back one more generation to Angus McFadyen/Ann McGivary and John Morrison/Margaret McEwen. My mother (Elizabeth & Hugh's grand-daughter) did not know very much about her Islay ancestors, but spoke about a connection to Bowmore Post Office. I eventually tracked the building down which I now believe is a private residence to the left and adjoining The Lochside Hotel in Shore Street. Hugh's brother Donald was the Post Master at the Post Office and other members of the family may have worked there. Although my mother lived fairly close to Islay (Renfrew) and had a strong urge to visit, she only manage a trip in the 1960's with my Dad but unfortunately they did not take the car (probably due to the cost) and only got to Port Ellen. She went on about how lovely Port Ellen was, but unfortunately did not make it to Bowmore - which is a great pity. I have only been to Bowmore once and it is lovely, as I am sure most of you know. It is fantastic to get that 'tingle' when you are there and be associated with such a beautiful place, I plan to return shortly. My mother would have been fascinated about what I have found out about Bowmore, the PO and her ancestors! Anyway, all the very best to everyone associated with Islay (especially from far-flung lands)and I look forward to being a bit more active with my research and input to the list in the future. All the best for Xmas and New Year - Phil & Family. 3. Philip, Best wishes to you and yours .... I don't think we have a connection, and yet it is always best to check. I have data on three Angus McFadyens who are close to fitting the man you mention below: 1. Angus McFadyen b. before 1770; m. Mary Carmichael, Daughter Mary chr. 23 Nov 1788 at Kinigary. 2. Angus McFadyen b. 6 Apr 1820, Mulindra, d. 1892 in Ontario, Canada; m. Anne McNabb 7 Feb 1846 Kilarrow. 3. Angus McFadyen (son of 2 above) b. 20 Apr 1847 Kinigary. No further information. Family had moved by 1853 to Renfrew and by 1858 to Ontario. I have no John Morrisons who fit closely, but one is worth mentioning: John Morrison b. about 1800, d. 1880 Port Charlotte; m. before 1831 Christian McFadyen, b. 1806 Islay, d. 1886 Dumbartonshire. Contact me if you want to check any details.
