I have a family story that says my great-great-grandfather, Archibald C. Campbell, was uncle to John Douglas Sutherland-Campbell, 9th Duke of Argyll, 4th Governor General of Canada, and husband to Louise, daughter to Queen Victoria. I am trying to relate these two men. Archibald C. Campbell was visited in Beaverton, Ontario, Canada, by John Ramsey of Islay, Argyll in 1870 when John Ramsey came to Canada, purposely to see how his people were settling in their new country. This is recorded in John Ramsey’s diary of the trip to Canada and his life on Islay. He speaks of “Archibald Campbell, cart-wright, from Lurabus”. In this same diary John Ramsey speaks of Archiblad C. Cambpell’s wife, Ann(e) Mathieson, daughter of J. Mathieson who “perished in a snowstorm at Proaig." John Ramsay also mentioned in this same diary Archibald had a brother, William Campbell, living in Woodville, Ontario, Canada with his wife, Mary Hunter. “Campbell, William, from Lurabus, the Oa; brother of Archibald of Beaverton” and “Hunter, Ronald, of Glenegedale, Kildalton Parish, brother of Mrs. William Campbell, Woodville” John Ramsay also says in this 1870 diary that the brothers immigrated to Canada "16 years hence". That should be 1854. Some information I have come across says, “Emigration: 1854 SAILED FROM PORT ELLEN ISLE OF ISLAY TO SCOT”. I have also heard that Archibald may have had another brother, Alexander also living in Beaverton, Ontario, Canada but I haven’t found evidence of that. If anyone can help me connect Archibald C. Campbell to his supposed nephew John Douglas Sutherland-Campbell, or a possible brother Alexander and/or provide parents and/or sibling names, or any other information, I would be delighted! Many thanks, Anna
Hello Iain MacIntosh! Just want to say thank you for sharing Betsy's photo album & putting a link up on the Islay Mailing List. It's fabulous. I visited Islay in 2003 and in 2006 but I sure wish I met Betsy! Just wondering if her family tree is for public viewing, as I have MacKinnon & Ferguson ancestors from Islay as well? I'd be happy to share info regarding my Islay ancestors. Cheers, Diana in B.C., Canada

Hi, I believe many people will be interested in seeing this appreciation of Betsy West, which appeared in The Herald on Saturday, 28th March 2015: http://www.heraldscotland.com/comment/obituaries/bessie-west.121575561 We had the pleasure of meeting Betsy a good few years ago and had a lovely chat with her about our Logan and McNiven ancestors from Islay. Kind regards, Moira Logan Glasgow
Hi Dianne Your going to Islay is a lovely plan. Hopefully you will find some living relatives there. I have not been there yet. My CURRIEs continue to be illusive. My gr-grandfather Archibald CURRIE came from Islay, but we don't know from what community. His Oro, Ontario 1871 marriage reg, to Flora GALBRAITH, says he was born in 1841 and his parents names were James and Lizzie. The only James and Lizzie that I have found are on the 1841 census at Kilmeny. James was shown as a taylor, which fits what we think we know about him. If any of these folk sound familiar to you I would appreciate hearing from you. cheers Lois ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dianne Taeckens via" <sct-islay@rootsweb.com> To: "Islay" <sct-islay@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, March 27, 2015 4:39:04 PM Subject: [SCT-ISLAY] Currie/McNevin My great, great grandparents, Neil Currie and Christina McNevin left Kilchoman, Islay, in 1855 heading for Ontario and eventually Michigan. I was very sorry to learn of the death of Betsy West. My sister and I had the good fortune to visit with her in her living room in her house in Portnahaven in June 2013. Our guide on Islay, Christine Logan, the Lady of the Isles introduced us to her. She welcomed us to her home on very short notice and we had a nice chat about Islay genealogy. There was a stack of colorful sweaters she had been knitting for children in Malawi. Quite an amazing lady. Thanks for the link to the photo gallery. Allison Akgungor
Dear Iain, Thanks for your email note telling me of the death of Betsy (McNeill) at the age of 99 years. While it is a sad moment for all who knew her and regularly communicated with her. She has left a great legacy of the ancestral family information which she personally knew and passed on to her friends. This will be a great way to remember her. Thanks also for the picture gallery and I think that you may have sent it to me before. Hi I am trying to find out how my great great grandfather Archibald McFee/McPhee would have managed to get the position of Lighthouse keeper at this Port Ellen lighthouse. In the 1841 census he was living in Portnahaven with wife Catherine and children - no occupation was given but I assumed he was a fisherman as was his father Donald. By 1851 he has moved with his family from Portnahaven to the lighthouse on The Oa where he lived till he died in 1877. Any help appreciated
An intriguing question Liz. I wonder if the National Archives of Scotland would have records to help you? There's a good book, The Light House Stevensons by Bella Bathhurst, that might interest you. I found a site that has it and others listed https://www.nlb.org.uk/historical/stevenson.htm Good luck - and please let us know what you discover.
