    1. Re: [SCT-ISLAY] Free Credits
    2. Laura Napl via
    3. Janet, the free credit offer is open to people who are already registered and those who are brand new to Scotlandspeople. I have heard no one say that they were required to purchase credits before receiving the free credits. I wondered how SP was processing the free credits so I decided to also purchase more, regular credits after I got my free credits. The receipt for the free credits did not have the day’s date of purchase on the receipt - just some other numbers, but my purchased credits had the current day’s date on the receipt. 3. Alasdair, With this bit of additional information, I can now identify your Euphemia McNabb. She was the dau of Duncan McNabb & Catherine McCormack. These McNabbs are connected with my own family and I have several generations of Duncan's ancestry, siblings, cousins, etc, named McNabb, Morrison, McCuaig, McArthur, etc. Several migrated to Canada in the mid 1800s. Let me know if you would like to pursue this. 3. Well, Johan, I suspect he was away on holiday with his daughter but I don't know for sure. He had been Principal Customs Officer on Islay for about 10 - 15 years and seems to have retired to Tarbert. His daughter was with him when he died so I think they must have been visiting someone or just travelling. There's a lot I don't know but at least I now have his death date and place. His cause of death says 'congestion of brain' which I would think means he had a stroke. The family seems to have kept in touch with cousins but I don't know of any in Perthshire. Incidentally no less than eight copies of your email arrived straight after each other - does that mean you pressed send 8 times or does your computer have a bit of a problem? Yes, Islay is beautiful and we enjoyed it in several weather conditions over a short time! ....Ah - this is interesting but may mean nothing. Duncan's mother was a McNeill from Gigha and I've just discovered that in 1891 there is one McNeill living in the parish where Duncan died. A widow called Annabella, born in Madras. It may signify nothing at all and I don't know how to research this but some of Duncan's McNeill cousins were mariners ........ but Annabella may have been married to a McNeill or may be one in her own name..... I'll think about it later Best regards, Mary

Hello Roger, We finally got to Islay and spent a lovely few days there (I would have liked longer but........) We found Duncan McPhail's grave - Lair 15 against the wall - and it also records the deaths of his wife, son and daughters. The reason I'd failed to find his death on scotlandspeople was that he died in Perthshire where I had not expected him to be! Thanks for your help - he seems to have been living at Tarbert after retirement but buried on Islay with his family. Best wishes, Mary

    3. Hi Alasdair, Welcome to the list. We've just returned from a visit to Islay. It is a very lovely island if you haven't been ............ Do you have dates for your father and grandparents? You should be able to find the marriage of your grandparents on scotlandspeople (£7 for 30 credits and a certificate only costs a total of 6 credits including the initial search). This should reveal the names of your great grandparents and possibly even great-greats depending on the dates. Using wildcards helps you not to waste credits - for instance for Euphemia try just E* or Eu* and gradually narrow it down. Compulsory registration began in 1855 in Scotland but you can often find marriages earlier than that on the Old Parish Records also via scotlandspeople. best regards, Mary
