Well, I don't have any (known) McMillans but the mention of the McMillan Party prompts me to stop dithering and announce that there will be an Islay Research Day / Gathering in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada in August. I'm going to post the date this week. This will be at the BC Genealogical Society's Walter Draycott Library - lots of research material there - and a friend who is really good at searching Scotland's People on-line will come to help those wanting to try that website. It's been a very long time since we met in Surrey and I know there are at least a couple of new Islay researchers locally so hope they can attend as well as some of us who've been doing this a while. Some photos of previous gatherings are here: http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~steve/islay/data.htm Anyone interested in helping with this event, do let me know. More info will be available this week. Diane M. Diane Rogers My e-mail: canadagenealogy@shaw.ca Local phone # 604-724-8744

My G G Grandmother was Flora McEachern born 3/3/1816 at Leachdehaunairt (according to Mull geneology). This is most likely Loch Beinn Uraraidh according to my very Scottish son-in-law. The sound is right he says. She came to New Zealand with her husband Archibald MacDonald and was the first white woman to settle in a small township on the east coast of the North Island. The climate and beautiful white sandy beach was obviously an enjoyment for them all and it is said they swam daily, all year round, not getting over the novelty that the water was warm enough. The smithy was on the edge of the beach and a tidal estuary. Lovely place! Flora was well known, and there has been snippets written about her and about the area. She died 25/8/1905 in a fire caused by her smoking a pipe in her bed. A book was written about the community in the 1960 by a man who remembered "old Mrs McDonald" well. Her husband was a blacksmith on the Isle of Mull and they lived at Lochdonhead before coming to NZ. Her parents are listed as John McEachern and Catherine Black/Clark born in the 1780 and seemingly from Bowmore. I'd love to learn more and share any sparse surmising or research I have. Looking forward to being involved. Regards Linda ------------------------------- Quoting the entire text of a previous message in a reply is poor netiquette. Greetings from Islay, Linda. There is a place on the western shore of Loch Gruinart called (@present) Leckgruinart, which is fairly close to your name of gggmother's place of birth. It is in the parish of Kilchoman. I think it is more probable than Loch Ben Uraraidh which is a very bleak place. A friend who knows the area well tells me there is only a ruined shieling (a basic shelter used when cattle were at summer grazing). Hopefully this link will help you locate Leckgruinart. Please contact me off list if you have a problem with it or if you would like a photograph. https://m.facebook.com/places/map.php?id=772998989384930&refid=17 Best wishes, Freddie Bell, Port Ellen freddie@islay.biz On 1 May 2015, at 01:30, Linda McDonald via <sct-islay@rootsweb.com> wrote: Hi, I am a newby trying to find a little more information about my McEachern ties. I am saddened to hear of Roger's illness. Let's hope he gets well soon. He is such a kind and generous soul. Grant
I am so sorry to learn of Roger's illness. He was very helpful to me when researching ancestors prior to visiting Islay in 2013. I hope he makes a good recovery. Allison Akgungor (Canada) Sent from my iPad
So sorry to hear that Roger is not feeling optimal..........hope he is feeling much better, soon.
Thanks for the info earlier Janet, and I had some credit and just went in and then these 20 were added. I thought it was only a promotion to get new people involved, and I disregarded it until your message. Best wishes to the gentleman who is ill. It was one of the highlights of our 3 month trip to UK to go and meet my unknown step aunt, my cousins, and to be at the gravesite of my great grandparents. Hi Mary Can you give me his death date please. Glad you solved that one. It has been your 'brick wall' for some time? He had been Principal Customs Officer on Islay for about 10 - 15 years and seems to have retired to Tarbert. His daughter was with him when he died so I think they must have been visiting someone or just travelling. There's a lot I don't know but at least I now have his death date and place. His cause of death says 'congestion of brain' which I would think means he had a stroke. The family seems to have kept in touch with cousins but I don't know of any in Perthshire. Incidentally no less than eight copies of your email arrived straight after each other - does that mean you pressed send 8 times or does your computer have a bit of a problem? Yes, Islay is beautiful and we enjoyed it in several weather conditions over a short time! ....Ah - this is interesting but may mean nothing. Duncan's mother was a McNeill from Gigha and I've just discovered that in 1891 there is one McNeill living in the parish where Duncan died. A widow called Annabella, born in Madras. It may signify nothing at all and I don't know how to research this but some of Duncan's McNeill cousins were mariners ........ but Annabella may have been married to a McNeill or may be one in her own name..... I'll think about it later Best regards, Mary ------------------------------- Quoting the entire text of a previous message in a reply is poor netiquette.
