Hi, It is nice to see so much activity on the Islay site lately. I was wondering if anyone had come across the name McBrayne being interchanged with McGillivray in their research? In my research to find John McGillivray and Jane Dallas first found on the 1841 census in Greenock I had some local research done on Islay and around Lochgilphead. No convincing sign of the family was found before 1841 except for Jane Dallas of Killarow Islay b. 1806 daughter of John Dallas and Janet McGilvera who may be the wife. She was born on Islay in 1806 according to her Ontario death registration. The local researcher had seen the name McGilvary and McBrayne interchanged in another project she did and passed on a similar possibility for my information which I have attached below. I have not been able to discount this possibly with further work and on the 1841 census they did have a Sarah McBryan living with them in Greenock. When I was searching for records of your McGilvray family - I did an IGI search and was very surprised to come across a similar anomaly: Marriage: December 1833 in Kilmacolm, Renfrew "John McBryne and Jane Dolas". Birth/Baptism of child "Jean Mcbrayne" 26 January 1835 in North Knapdale, Argyll, to "John Mcbrayne and Jean Dallace". Of course, this could just be the strangest co-incidence, but it does (vaguely) match with your family. I have no explanation as to why both surnames were used (in my previous research). If anyone has been researching McBrayne or seen McBrayne and McGillivray interchanged it would be great to know. Also if anyone is researching Dallas and knows anything more about Jane Dallas and her family it would be most helpful. Regards, John McGilvary Calgary
Congrats Toni on birth of your beautiful little granddaughter. Islay lives on. Sent from my Samsung device

I suspect that the name "Isla" may well have become popular in Scotland after a few famous people popped up with that name, and I think those people were probably named after the River Isla, a tributary of the Tay that runs through Angus and Perthshire in eastern Scotland. Scots intending it to refer to the island would probably tend to leave the "y" on the end. On Islay itself, the name Islay tended to be a boy's name rather than a girl's, but my daughter still chose the name - with a "y" - for one of her girls. On her first visit to the island she was to be heard proudly telling everyone, friend, relative or stranger, that she was on Islay and she was called Islay. It made it easy to buy her apparently personalised T-shirts, available in just about every gift shop on the island. -----Original Message----- From: Toni via Sent: Friday, November 27, 2015 6:26 PM To: Jim BAIRD ; sct-islay@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [SCT-ISLAY] SCT-ISLAY Well, Jim, I'm just delighted by the fact that many generations away from our beloved Islay, our children still want to honour their heritage by naming their children after their ancestors' homeland. I am in UK http://www.familytreedna.co.uk/ is used very successfully by many UK folks
After a lifetime of many, many pronunciations of my name Islay I now am told by the baby generation that it has become 'popular' and everyone seems to know it without the 'Y' . Many a story I have told about the place where my ancestors left in 1833. I have been 2 times and was especially nice when all knew how to say it!! Islay McMillan Perkins Canada
