Hello Barbara, Welcome to the list. I had been searching online for some years for the grave of my relatives who died on Islay in the mid-late 19th Century but discovered very little until we actually went there last year. We went I think to the Bowmore Library where there is someone genealogical information and quite quickly found my relatives' stone in the graveyard of the Round Kirk. No doubt it would be harder if your ancestor was buried in a different area but I think they could help you. Roger McWee was very helpful but I don't know whether he is still on the list as he was ill recently. Hope this helps. Cheers, Mary
HiMy name is barbara Douglas and I have just joined this list. My great grandfather James Forbes lived on Islay between 1884 and 1886 and then again between 1910 and 1919 when he died (he is buried in Bowmore Cemetery). He was Factor to the Islay Estate in each of these periods. I'm also researching his daughter Gracie Forbes (married name McKillop) whose husband was Factor from 1919 to about 1935. They had a son known in the family as Hamish, but is Seamus on his birth certificate. He died on Islay in 1933 at the age of 15 and I'd love to know where he is buried so I can visit his grave when I come to visit Islay. I wondered if anyone might have any information? With many thanks and best wishesBarbara

Hi Lola, Not sure if you already have all this, but I once made a record of children of Donald McCaig and Betsy Brown: Ann (1806), John (1809), Mary (yours), Margaret (1813), Alex (1815) and Marion (1818). Extended families sometimes shared accommodations, so could Hugh have ended up living with one of them - somewhere off Islay? Brick walls are a pain. I am trying to trace my elusive grandfather, Hugh Stewart (b. 1846) of Kildalton, Islay. He joined the army at 17 into the 73rd Foot (which later became the Black Watch) June 1864 to Nov. 6, 1876 and qualified as a Chelsea Pensioner. He was listed in various census records as a Mason's Labourer. He married Catherine McEwing in Campbeltown on Dec. 3, 1885. My father, Robert McEwing Stewart was born on July 25, 1886 in Campbeltown. There is no further record of Hugh Stewart..no census, no death records. I am trying to find out what happened to him. Hoped to find when his Chelsea Pension stopped, indicating his death, but no luck there. He suffered from tuberculosis so unlikely that he emigrated. Can anyone assist me? His father was John Stewart, b. 1814 on Islay and was a Tinsmith. Mother was Mary McCaig b. 1816, d. 1872 in Bowmore (her parents were Donald McCaig and Betsy Brown). His siblings - Robert b. 1844; John b. 1848; Mary b. 1850; Susan b. 1854. Both Robert and John were in the Police force in Glasgow. Robert died in the Bowmore Poorhouse of tuberculosis (sister Mary had died at age 16 of TB). Hoping to smash my brickwall! Thank you! Lola Cook (nee McEwing) lola.cook@shaw.ca
I just checked our local library and they have a copy of Down and Out in Scotland. Perhaps your library has a copy too – or get it via inter-library loan. Cheers, Sue Visser
