Hi List With unexpected last minute changes to our Christmas plans (was grounded and couldn't fly to Calgary to be with our family as planned) I finally found the time to read Peat, Smoke and Spirit, A Portrait of Islay and Its Whiskies by Andrew Jefford, ISBN 0 7472 2735 7. For those who know me, this might seem funny since I cannot drink Islay's malt (allergic to barley!) but reading this book was time well spent. Jefford has a picturesque way with words that had me climbing the hills with him. I found myself wishing that I'd had family connected with the distilleries so that I could add the interesting info to my research. Intersperced among the distilleries' histories are chapters that intrigued me even more including early times, recent times, peat, weather, nature, shipwrecks and Islay today. The only sour note in the book was lousy editing insofar as each and every time "Kildalton" was mentioned, (and there were 100s of times!) it was misspelled as "Kidalton" and I found it distracting/maddening. Even the bibliography notes for Freda Ramsay's "John Ramsay of Kildalton" had it misspelled as "Kidalton". Another minor editing error was calling the Museum of Islay Life by another name (pg 306). Overall I highly recommend this book to Islay researchers. Cheerio Sue Visser Ontario, Canada
Hi List, I am a new subscriber and for many years have enjoyed reading the list and picked up a few tips along the way to help me with my family history. I live in a small town called Helensburgh on the West coast of Scotland and visit Islay at least once a year where the family grave (Macdonald) is at Kilnaughton cemetery. I now have problems with my great, great grandmothers relatives and hope someone on the list may be able to help me find out more about her family. KIlmeny Census of 1851 Portnellan Farm shows the following: Age Born Duncan McArthur 35 Bowmore Parish ( He died 5/5/1888 at Lagavulin his parents were Peter McArthur schoolmaster & Betsy McQuilkan married 14/2/1807) Catherine MacEachern 38 Ballochroy Parish (She died 27/10/1878 at Ardbeg her parents were Alexander McEachern Seaman & Janet McCallum ) Peter 12 Mary 10 Keppols Betty 9 Alex 4 Janet 1 My g grandmother married to Donald McDonald I cannot find a date of birth or any record of Catherine McEachern's marriage but do know that a Alexander McEachern & Janet McCallum of Callumkills emigrated to Canada in the 1850"s Does anyone know if my Catherine is part of this family ? Also I am trying to find out if Betsy McQuilkan was widowed and remarried a Neil McAllister around 1816?as i cannot find any trace of her death. Hopefully Dona Findlay

Mac, For those of us descendents whose relatives stopped speaking Gaelic before we were born, can you give us a pronunciation of Merry Christmas & Happy New Year in Gaelic? Thanks! Hi List, I was peeking in a book tonight, "Reveries of a Pioneer-Perth County" by Vera Ernst McNichol, and this passage is on page 378. The McKaigs.... Donald McKaig and his daughter Kate, Fron Scotland's Isle of Islay, Died on June the nineteenth,1898, And were buried upon the same day. Lot fourteen on concession twelve, Four times was in the McKaig name. Donald, James, and the wife of James, And then Calder McKaig laid claim. On page 393, "Century Farms"....The McKaig Farm, lot 14, Con 12 was taken up by Donald McKaig in 1860, passed to James McKaig, then to his wife and in 1966 to their son Calder. I would be very interesting in locating a copy of the above history, written and published in 1983 by John Hicks Campbell. Their gravestone in Boston Mills Cemetery, Chinguacousy Twp, Peel Co, ON reads John Campbell died Aug 9, 1884 aged 77 years; Margaret Sinclair his wife died Jan 15, 1892 aged 82 years. Has anyone seen a copy of the history? Thank you. Lorne
Heartiest Best Wishes to all those that yearn for a closer connection to our Islay forefathers/mothers. It is through your wondrous grey-matter, concerted determination and collegial co-operation that we have come this far. Happy Christmas Don McLellan Ontario, Canada
Hi Ken I've had kidney stones and I felt that I would die. No such luck, yet. Women who have both passed stones and given birth have told me that the kidney stone was worse. This is a repeat of something shared a couple of years ago - had fun with it then so doing it again. (With very sincere apologies to Major Henry Livingston Jr. (1748-1828), author of Twas the Night Before Christmas or Account of a Visit from St. Nicholas) 'Tis the week before Christmas, And all through our house There should be a flurry.....But my hand's on the mouse Clicking my way through e-mails galore Not searching for presents all over the store; The Christmas tree's standing but only half dressed As I track down a cousin who's somewhere out west And colourful wrappings are piled waiting for gifts While I'm busy computing with the SCT-ISLAY list. Now Dougal! Now Finlay! now Mary and Ann! Come Sarah! Come Malcom! and the rest of the clan! "Where are you hiding? Behind the kirk wall?" Is the song that I'm singing out into the hall. Our tree of needles is looking so naked and bare While the family tree's glowing with diligent care But NOW 'tis the time to take note and to heed And pay more attention to present family needs, So before I sign off (true, with a wee sigh) I'll just take a minute for a 'cheerio' hi And send a "Merry Christmas to all!", to each dear one of you.... May 2006 bring you good health, happy days,.... and a new cousin or two.
