    3. I wish I knew as much as you about my decedents. This is what I know about my ggrandfather: John Johnston born about Jan 12, 1833, emigrated to Canada around mid 1850s, may have departed from Greenock after staying with a relative. parents: John Johnston and Agnes Mc... looks like McLoc on a marriage cert, but we always thought that a McLean was in our family. He always said he was from Islay. I know a lot about his after he came to Canada, but it is his Scottish roots that I would like to delve into. Wish I had more. As your Alexander Johnston and Mary Graham did not have a John, perhaps a relative of Alexander did. I have a photo of my ggrandfather which I've put up on the web at: www3.telus.net/artnorma/johnston. We've always wondered if this was taken somewhere on Islay. If you do not have any information that would fit into this, perhaps someone you recommended does. If you don't want to give out their e-mail, feel free to forward this on to anyone!! thks very much for your response. 2. Hi Norma- The dust of the holidays finally has settled somewhat, and I am now getting back to you regarding my Islay Johnston connections. There's just one: Anne Johnston, b. abt 1792, baptised 30 Aug 1794 to Alexander Johnston & Mary Graham of Taicaramagan, Kildalton Parish. Married Colin Campbell of Mulindry, Kilarrow Parish, 22 Feb 1816, Kilarrow Parish. She apparently already was widowed by the time of the the 1841 census. Anne emigrated to Bruce County, Ontario in the 1860s or 1870s with some of her offspring and their families, . Anne Johnston and Colin Campbell were my g-g-g-grandparents through their oldest child, Mary Campbell, who married Alex McDougall of Kilbride, Kildalton in 1842. Alex Johnston and Mary Graham had three sons in addition to Anne; Ronald 1784, William 1790, and Donald, who was the youngest of the children. The real Johnston expert of this list is Sheila Kronenberger of Illinois. She is descended from Donald, and has done extensive work on the family. Also, I believe that John McFarlane, also of this list, has Johnston connections through his wife's family. Who are your Johnston connections, Norma? How do they fit in with all this? 3. A happy new year to all family researchers. I have posted my family tree on the website. My mother's family were from Islay and included Curries and Frasers and as you go further back many other familiar Islay names. I have more details on some of the families. My website is: http://geocities.com/alan.ccas@btinternet.com/ This is very long winded and I can access the site by entering alan iain cameron on the google search engine. However, there may be a cookie helping. I am happy to follow up any queries. Alan

    3. I didn't realize the Kelvin area of Glasgow had a predominance of Islay folk. Now I understand why in 1862 my gr. grandfather William McDougall got married at 2 Dock St. Kelvinhaugh, Glasgow. We think at that time 2 Dock St. was an inn or something on the corner. Just a couple of doors away lived another relation but there is no data for 2 Dock St. It is no longer in exitence and now there is a school on the site. Celia.

    1. Re: [SCT-ISLAY] Fw: Archibald Buie
    2. Dear Lorne: There was a Buie family in Grey County who was also from Islay. I’m not sure if this family is related to Captain John Buie who died in Arran Township, Bruce County in 1874 at age 93. I found the following obituary for a John Buie who died in 1927. Death of Mr John Buie Jan 26 1927 Early Lake Mariner Died in Township of Collingwood Collingwood: Jan 26 -- John Buie passed away at him home in Singhampton last Wednesday. His death followed a slight stroke of paralysis with which he was seized just before Christmas. Mr Buie was born in Islay, Scotland and had just passed his 90th birthday. When a child of eight years his parents came to Canada to this section of the Province, settled in the Township of Osprey on the farm on the northwest corner of the tenth line and the Nottawasaga townline. With his father and brothers he joined in clearing the farm but upon reaching young manhood he followed his brother Duncan and Donald to the lakes where he engaged in sailing for many years. Forty two years ago he returned to the land and until five years ago when he moved into Singhampton, followed the occupation of farming. Of his five brothers and two sisters there is but one, Hugh, of Osprey now living. Mr Buie saw much of the pioneer life of Osprey and Nottawasaga districts. He was there as a boy and knew something of the privations and the hardships. He also experienced the difficulties of early sailing on the lakes and he learned by hard knocks the ups and downs of the life of the mariners when the occupation was far from enjoying the comforts and aids of today. On the 1851 Census for Osprey Township, Grey County I found the family of Buies on pages 5 and 7. Archibald Buie age 45 Presbyterian Mary Ann Buie age 42 Duncan Buie 18 Dugald Buie 16 John Buie 14 Archibald Buie 5 Mary Ann 4 Angus Buie 2 Kind regards Anne Goeden

    3. Dear Toni I have files relating to the mcewing/mcewen/mcewan's from the Oa but searching for either Sinclair or Fletcher does not give a hit. However, my files don't cover all Islay Mcewen's. John McEwan -----Original Message----- From: Toni Sinclair [mailto:tonisinclair@hotmail.com] Sent: Thursday, 5 January 2006 2:26 p.m. To: SCT-ISLAY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [SCT-ISLAY] McEwan/Fletcher/Sinclair Hi fellow listers, In the excerpts of John Murdoch's manuscript I sent to the list a couple of months ago, he twice referred to the Fletchers "who were closely related" to the Sinclairs (who were printers of Gealic literature in Glasgow after leaving Islay.) I can't find a relevant marriage between the Sinclairs and Fletchers, so I'm hoping that Archibald Sinclair's wife, Agnes/Ann McEwen, might be related to Islay Fletchers. My name Andrew Duffy and like Dona Findlay I live on the West Coast of Scotland in Greenock which is right across the River Clyde from where Dona stays. The 1841 census has Finlay Ferguson three children staying at 60 Gruinart he was aged 40 with kids Donald 18, Rachel 13 and Catherine 11. Rachel married a Duncan McLean on Rothesay and they had two kids Duncan and Catherine who was born in Shotts Iron Works of all places. Catherine married Andrew Duffy in Greenock they had at least one Daughter Rachel who was my grandmother she married and separated took her own name again thus my name being Duffy. I would like to hear from anyone connected to that Ferguson Family believe Finlay had two sisters Mary and Margaret and one brother Alexander I do not no his wifes name but believe his fathers name to be Peter and Mother Margaret McEachern. My granny was Ann Gilchrist born in Bowmore in 1899. Most of my information is between 1800 and now (about 200 people) and contains siblings as well as direct descendents. I'll post again with more information in the next few weeks. I hope that those of you outside UK can help me fill in gaps and I can do the same. Heather
