    2. Toni Sinclair
    3. Thanks, Lorne, Jane Sinclair Currie comes from an interesting family - her parents and some brothers went from Peel Co. (Caledon twp) to Petrolia Ontario, and became internationally known in the oil industry (but apparently not the famous "Sinclair Oil" company. One brother, Laughlin, became a well-known doctor in Tillsonburg. At home I have a biography of her father John Sinclair. 1. Narrative about Early settlers
    2. Mary MacKay
    3. Hi Listers, For those of you interested in reading about the experiences of early pioneer settlers from Islay to Ontario, I have written a historical narrative based on our ancestors who came from Islay in 1848 , settling first in the Durham. Ontario area and later moving to Bruce County. ‘COME DANCE WITH ME, A Grandmother’s Tale of Pioneer Days’ takes you from the adventures of a modern-day grandmother with her grandchildren, back one hundred and fifty-seven years into the lives of their pioneer ancestors who immigrated to Canada from Islay, Scotland. ‘COME DANCE WITH ME’ is a fascinating story of pioneer days brought to life with many pictures and very real experiences. Contact me off list if you would like more details Mary MacKay jms.mackay@bmts.com

    2. Allan Currie
    3. Jane's husband, John Currie, was my grandfather's brother. I have a book, once owned by her, (or her mother) "Sailm Dhaibhidh" (Psalms of David). On the inside of the cover is "Jane C. Sinclair, Feb. 27/59". She married John Currie Jan. 25, 1860 in Caledon Twp. about a year later. Of their four children, two died unmarried in the 1890s. The remaining son, my father's cousin John Sinclair Currie had only one grandchild so most of the descendants are from daughter Isabella who married Archie Macgillivray. Archie's sister, Flora, married the dour Duncan MacArthur that I mentioned a little while ago. One brother was the Very Rev. Malcolm Macgillivray, B.A. Queen's 1872, M.A. 1874, D.D. 1903 and Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Canada Jane's brother, Neil, was mentioned in "Petrolia 1874 - 1974". "Neal Sinclair is being an oil driller in Italy, Germany, Roumania and Galicia."

    2. John MacArthur
    3. Perhaps the first part of the name is Nic meaning "daughter of" as gaelic tradition is similar to the Icelandic in last name convention. Hi friends, Its time to pick the brains of some of you who have the Gaelic. There are 2 entries in the OPR Bowmore Parish births that are puzzling me: Sinclair Hugh Buchanan Mary Eorabus Hugh 7 Apr 1793 Sinclair Hugh Nchnehanit Mary Balole Archibald 12 Jan 1771 Would "Nchnehanit" translate to Buchanan? There were very few Hugh Sinclairs in the late 1700s, and I'm thinking he is the same man. I've double checked the writing in the OPR, and that is actually the way it looks. Any help would be appreciated. Toni _________________________________________________________________ Designer Mail isn't just fun to send, it's fun to receive. 3. Could the Islay list admin please drop me a line? Killing two birds with one stone (and in the spirit of the season)... Haggis Much to his dad and mum's dismay Horace ate himself one day He didn't stop to say his grace He just sat down and ate his face "We can't have this!" his dad declared "If that lad's ate he should be shared" But even as he spoke they saw Horace eating more and more: First his legs and then his thighs, His arms, his nose, his hair, his eyes "Stop him someone!" Mother cried "Those eyeballs would be better fried!" But all too late for they were gone, And he had started on his dong... "Oh foolish child!" the father mourned "You could have deep-fried those with prawns, Some parsley and some tartar sauce..." But H was on his second course; His liver and his lights and lung, His ears, his neck, his chin, his tongue "To think I raised him from the cot And now he's gone to scoff the lot!" His mother cried what shall we do? What's left won't even make a stew..." And as she wept her son was seen To eat his head his heart his spleen And there he lay, a boy no more Just a stomach on the floor... 3. Hi Listers I have been sulking for the past while trying to catch up when I can. Enjoying the list when I have time. Sorry I haven't been participating as much as I would have liked to. Query: I have been following a James McCuaig family. The wife's surname in the birth of all her children has been Cargyle or various spellings of the same. I have followed the family through the 1841 to 1881 censuses where she is now reported as being 80 years old However the only death registration I can find for someone with her married surname, given name and husband's name has the maiden surname McGill. Is this a name change that others are aware of or am I chasing the wrong worman? Monta Salmon

    3. Hi Sue, You might explore external hard drives. The costs are dropping fast - they are now runing about $1.00 per Gigabyte - $100 for a 100 gig external drive. Easy to install - just attach via your USB plug. As they are external they are portable. And they make it SO EASY to backup. They act just like your C drive. There are a number of companies are selling many storage sizes - - they can be found by exploring the web.
