If you know Janet's surname during the 1901 Canadian Census you can look her up in the index at http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/index.html From there you can view the actual census using the split screen above the census index listing. Column 12 should reveal the year of immigration. Hope this helps. Thanks Dixie Andy
I found my ggrandfather's emigration year (John Johnston) on the 1906 Alberta Census. I haven't found this info any other place. Since he came from the British Isles he wouldn't have been considered an "immigrant". I don't know if other provincial census' gathered this information. Can any fellow listers tell me if the1851 census can be viewed anywhere on line. Andy Duffy
Hi Andy: I have most of the 1851 Islay census transcribed but it will be another month or so before I can put it out there. If you have a specific I could probably look it up for you. Most of what I have left is proof reading. Ted Andy Duffy wrote: >Can any fellow listers tell me if the1851 census can be viewed anywhere on line. The FreeCen site is working on it -- some areas are done but not Islay when I last checked. > Can any fellow listers tell me if the1851 census can be viewed anywhere on > line. I neglected to tell you about other sites for searching war casualties. In addition to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission http://www.cwgc.org/ , there is also the British War Memorial Project http://www.britishwargraves.org.uk/ . This site is similar to the Maple Leaf Legacy Project (Canada) http://www.mapleleaflegacy.org/ The intent of the last two sites is to photograph all war graves worldwide. In addition to individual war graves, there also are photographs of the cemeteries and/or monuments. With the MLLP, over 92.000 commemorations have been photographed with less than 25,000 graves still to be photographed. Both the Maple Leaf Legacy Project and the British War Memorial Project are volunteer projects. Volunteers are needed and welcomed. Personally my husband and I found our participation very meaningful and such a small way to show our respect - it was very moving. Genealogists are perfect for the task since we spend so much time in cemeteries. Even if you are only able to photograph the small cemetery around the corner, that too is valuable. Please go to the websites to see how you can help. The photos taken are available free of charge (donations accepted of course) with applications available at the websites. Cheerio Sue Visser

Hi John: The book "Hardscrabble" says, on page 37, that Ronald Gilchrist donated one acre of land for the church and cemetery. What other information is on the film? I see only one Spence and no Storries. It was recently confirmed here that Donald Spence and Ann Hay Storrie lived on Lossit Farm. A letter from Canada to Scotland shows that Donald b 1805 in Islay was a distiller at Lossit and his wife Anne Hay Storrie was the daughter of the Excise Man. The show up in the 1851 Census of Victoria County Ontario where Donald donated the land for the Glenarm Cemetary. It would be interesting if the film in question here listed other members of the household or is it that the John Spence married between the date of the census and the birth of Donald in 1805. Perhaps if this film does not contain too much information It could be transcribed and posted? Hi List, My apologies for the confusion on this subject. I have found my faux pas.....take the "R" out of the argyllcensus. Should read "agyllcensus.htm"at the end of the address. Hope this corrects things for people.
