    3. I have to report that Scotlands People have now got all the Census Records on line and this is a great resource. Had great success with Kildalton in 1851, 61, 71 & 81. Unfortunately the 1891 and 1901 Census did not have my Campbell & McDougall people recorded on Islay, but they were searchable. Found that the Marion McDougall that I found years ago living alone at Shenighart as a 50 yr. old labourer was not my gr. gr. grandmother after all, as my Marion had relocated to Paisley to be with family. Thoroughly reccommend the money spent as worthwhile. Celia.

    3. FAO Celia Geary Celia, I see we share family surnames in our research of Islay and wonder if we are distantly related? My Great Grandmother was Annabella McDougall of Kildalton, Islay who married Neil Campbell from Tiree and my grandfather was their son John McDougall Campbell who married Margaret Nairn Oliver(although she was born in USA the family returned to Scotland about 1900) The following report from my software shows the relationships I have between Campbells and McDougalls, does anything match with your research? Not true! Most of them still work and, as before, most of them are quicker and easier than the mouse commands (and much better ergonomically). I always know when I have been using my mouse too much - I get a terrible painful knot in the muscles of my upper back. If I go back to using the old keyboard tricks and only use the mouse when absolutely necessary the pain goes away. As an example, I received and read this original message without touching the mouse, then selected the segment above and composed this reply, and now will send it, all without touching the mouse. I use Windows XP, and have maintained my use of the keyboard shortcuts through about 6 "upgrades" of operating systems, starting with DOS well over 20 years ago. When taking a few courses at different times during the 90s, instructors informed the classes that the old tricks were no longer possible. I interrupted the instructors, demonstrated that (most of them) still worked, to the amazement of the instructors. I think it was a "plot" to indoctrinate the instructors that one had to use the mouse, and then send them out to infect the rest of us. 3. Hi Listers I am trying to find the parents of Cathrine Hunter who married William Reid 7 Mar 1846. Children Mary, Duncan, Janet, Hugh, Cathrine and Marrion. William died in 1867. I haven't found his family on the 1871 census in Scotland nor can I find Cathrine's death registration. But I can find a Catharine Reid who is a widow in Nassagaweya, Halton, Ontario, Canada on the Canadian 1881 census with children Janet, Mary and Hugh. I am not sure it is them but you have to wonder. There is a death for a Catharine Reid in 1886 in Nassagaweya, Halton. She is a widow, age 86 and born in Islay. Again I wonder. Does anyone know for sure? Does anyone have any clues as to who her parents are? Monta Salmon

    2. seann mhaighdean
    3. Yes, well, there has been a couple of wonderings on the subject of long standing English families moving to Islay and why would they do that and how could it be . . . Well, well, well, I don't know the answer, but let me tell you that the island is hoaching with English families at the present. They have come from down south of the border and bought up all the property and soon it will be a very different flavour to this island that you will experience when you come over. Neffer you mind all those romantic notions of staying in a wee croft where your old seanair maybe did or maybe didn't stay. Yes, yes, there is a very different colour and sound to the whole place coming - you mark my words. Right enough, a lot of them are nice people, but different, you know. Not celtic. No Islay connections. Just want out the rat race and so they come and push up all the house prices till no Ileach can afford them. And what with the global warming and the Atlantic turning just like the Mediterranean . . . then the sunseekers will be crowding the machair and Bogh Mhor will be swarming with tourists. Och, yes, all change. I can feel it in my old bones. Suas leis a'Ghaidhlig Tioraidh, SM ann <aqtu56@dsl.pipex.com> wrote: Hi Paul, I have also been wondering why a long standing Yorkshire family would move to Islay. What did Herman do for a living in Yorkshire? Having been on Scotlands People the last few days, I took a look for Eric today and Johan is correct, it has to be him I also searched on the surname in Kildalton and remember seeing 1 Dawson who had died aged 88 years. Scotlands people has deaths up to 1955. I would think this is your only record you would get from here as all the others will be too new.........if you get my drift. I would write directly to the Parish Priest, (or all of them around Kildalton!) you will find most of them quite accomodating if you are prepared to wait for them to get back to you. As you know the dates of their deaths it will not be a case of them searching through years of records. I am about to go back on SP site so I will have a dig around for you and if I have enough credits I will pull off the Eric record. If you e-mail me direct aqtu56@dsl.pipex.com save clogging the list with chit chat, I will mail you any findings. 2. Russ McGillivray
    3. Seann, I heartily agree with Sue. I daresay virtually everyone on the Islay list either has or wants to visit Islay sometime. One of the stumbling blocks is the cost of accomodation - most of the self-catering options are only economical for groups of several people. Knowing about accomodation owned by someone who shares an interest in family history (and at a reasonable price) is definitely 'on topic' in my opinion. In this case 'advertising' is not a dirty word - it is sharing information that we would have a difficult time finding out otherwise.
