Much of my information on the McNeills has come through Betsy via Ian. Betsy McNeill, age 90, lives in Portnahaven and has a great memory. Iain MacIntosh iain.macintosh@bigfoot.com on the Islay list is the one to contact since he's been working hard to document her memories and he might be able to help you. Is this your family in Kilchoman Parish 1841 Islay Census Kilnave Gilespie Donald M 30 Gilespie Mary F 25 Gilespie Mary F 7 Gilespie John M 4 Gilespie Anne F 3 Campbell Mary F 12 Please note that this is from a transcription and that it should be used as a tool and not fact. You should look at the original microfilm to verify. Also note that there are other Gillespie families at Kilnave. According to the transcription, there is only 1 McNeil family in Kilchoman Parish in 1841. They may or may not be related to your Mary. There are more McNeills just miles south in Portnahaven Parish. What has amazed me about the explosion of genealogy interest especially in the past 10 years is how many of our seniors have started from scratch on the computer in order to do their family trees. One lady on Islay started the computer at age 89. I personally have given lessons to 2 people in their 80s and a couple of youngsters in their 70s. For every person who has tackled the daunting task of learning the computer from scratch in order to do their genealogy, I yell BRAVO!! I know it might be frustrating for some who have oodles of experience when someone asks what seems to you to be a dumb question, especially an off topic question. Personally I think the only dumb question is the one not asked. What sets the Islay list apart from most other gen lists is that we become friends. We help one another even if we are not related to the specific family another person is researching. It seems natural to ask friends off topic questions. We all come from varied backgrounds with differing levels of education and experience. A little kindness and patience doesn't cost us a thing. In fairness, I agree that off topic threads can sometimes get out of hand. Personally, in future, I will try to be more consistent to answer off list when answering off topic questions that aren't genealogically or Islay related. Of course, there's still that magic button....if an off topic thread really irks you, then just "delete". Cheerio Sue
Hi, Would anyone know if there is available online, or anywhere else, a passenger list for the Albion of Glasgow which brought 181 Islay people to Quebec in 1832? Thanks very much. Gay
Well, now that was simple...thank you laurel
Hi Sue, Thank you for your quick response. I use Outlook Express 6 and changing the Text Size to 'smallest' (using 'view' & 'text size') changed the size of the print on my screen. (I had also previously changed the size on the screen back to the normal font size (12) by using the wheel.) The problem seems to be in priniting. The print comes out at font size 12 for the heading only but the body of message prints at what looks like size 18. Is this happening to anyone else??? Hi Dee Kindrochid, as it appears on modern maps, was/is a farm north of Loch Gorm. There are various spellings such as Ceandrochait or Keandrochead. Kindrochid is about 4-5 kilometres west and slightly south of Kilnave which is on the west shore of Loch Gruinart. You can download an interactive placenames of Islay map at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~steve/islay/maps/simon/simon.htm Interestingly enough my McCannel family was also from Kindrochid and emigrated to Ontario in 1847. Where did your family settle? Hi List: Does anyone have a listing of the passengers on the ship Donegal which, I believe, brought Scots to Canada in August 1834. Ted Larson
I think there is a tenuous relationship but not close. I will revisit this when I return as I am off to look after grandchildren for a week. Celia.
I have John Campbell on the 1851 census as the grandfather of Margaret and Ann McDougall at Frederick Crescent, Kildalton. The girls were 12 and 10 respectively. Their mother Isabella Campbell married Alexander McDougall. He died when the chilren were little and maybe Isabella had died or remarried. They also show up on the 1861 Census with John Campbell being 77. He does not appear on the 1871 census. Celia.
List Members, My husband Arnold and myself will be attending the Scottish Heritage Symposium at St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, NC this week-end. Is there anyone else on the list that plans to attend? They have a number of interesting speakers on the program. One in particular is Dr. Aonghus MacKechnie who is a native of Islay and currently serves as Principal Inspector of Historic Buildings and Monuments (1600-1750) for Historic Scotland. The topic of his presentation, " The Traditions and Lore of the Island of Islay and the West Highlands as Collected by John Francis Campbell and Hector MacLean". Would like to meet other list members if you plan to attend. Phyllis Beachum --- Phyllis Beachum --- abeachum2@earthlink.net --- EarthLink: It's your Internet.

Hi Listers: I was going over my saved mail from the last couple of years looking for something and found references to this booklet. I just wondered if we covered everyone who was listed in the booklet before? I read the messages I'd saved and I couldn't tell. I can't find it on a google search to be able to read. You know who I'm looking for...McNabb's & Currie's. How big is the booklet? Is there an index? Thanks!! Carolyn- in Springfield IL - we're still trying to get power in some areas of town- I'm so glad my section of town was spared the tornadoes!

The grandchildren seemed to be confused too because it states Mary on her tombstone but her granddaughter declared she was Flora .. so we now call her Mary Flora ... or do we have 2 different families here ... ??????
