Can anyone tell me if there is a List of MI's for Bowmore Churchyard ?. And I am also wondering if anyone may have been researching the surname McCallum on Islay , as I have a family of McCallum's who seem to have belonged to Campbeltown area ,but worked on Islay for many years and as far back as 1870's early 1900's as joiners. Regards Stewart Campbell
Stewart Campbell, In answer to your question about the McCallum family from Islay. Yes, there is someone working to this family name. My grgr grandparents were Isabella McLarty and Duglad McCallum who were married in Bowmore, Islay on September 07, 1830. My grgrandfather, Neil McCallum was born on Islay October 30,1831. There appears to be a discrepancy in his birth date as a June 1831 birth and baptism date appear on the Islay records. According to the obituary for one on Neil's sister's (1895) the family left Islay in 1844 and arrived in Montreal Quebec in 1844/1845. Dugald and Isabella's son Dugald McCallum was born in St Andrews, Carillon (Carry On) Quebec in November 1845. Then moved to Grey County, Ontario in 1846/1847. The problem I am having with the McCallum family is that I have no records of the senior Duglad's parents however, my information suggests that they are Duglad McCallum and Catherine McArthur. Hi Sue, Do you have your McCuaigs traced back to the 1790s? I know we've talked about my McCuaigs before but when I read your posting, I realized that I have come across a scrap of info from family history that could tie our families together. I think I told you about Margaret McCuaig who married Peter Angus McDougall on July 24 1813 in Kildalton Parish and resided at Grasdale prior to emigration to Thorah Twp , Ontario Co. Canada in 1831. The info I found says that Margaret lived at Kintra prior to her marriage. Margaret was born about 1793/1794 and died Aug 15, 1869. Do you see any connections with your family? I don't know her parents' names but their children were Duncan, Alexander, Christena (Christian), Peter, & Angus. Peter Angus' parents were Alexander McDougall and Christian Sinclair. Do you suppose Margaret's father was named Duncan? I would love your feedback. I'll have to go check and see if I can find any birth info in the OPRs. Yes, after the potato famine in 1846-7 there was a general exodus as men had to look for work to provide food for wives and children. Sometimes the emigration was only as far as Paisley on the mainland and in my family's case the husband went ahead in 1847, found work and then later, after the 1851 census, the family followed. Don't discount New Zealand and Australia as eventual places of emigration. A large number arrived in NZ in 1848. Celia

Hi, Thought I would give this a go.... yes, a newcomer! Am interested to find out if anyone has any information on a Murdoch McDonald, he marries Catherine McEachern in 1803 and as far as I know only had one son William, who became a well respected Doctor in Glasgow. On William's Baptism record the address is given as Islay House - not sure whether they were living there (in service) or whether they were at Home Farm next door which at the time was occupied by Catherine's brother Donald McEachern.
